i need some reassurance....my baby had two seizures...one time was a week after he turn 1 year...and another was last month...im a new mommy and im not use to seeing these kind of stuff...so when my baby had his first seizure i had no idea what was happening...i was so scared...so we called 911 and had him taken to the er...now, my baby wasnt sick or anything...i know he had a bit of stuffy nose...but he was playing that day...the doctors did every kind of test...urine simples to cat scan to xrays...everything...but they didnt get any infections or a cause to why he had the seizures....first they thought that it was in ear infection...and retested...so the head doctor said that it wasnt...so we were discharged from the hospital at about 12 am...the second time...he had a bit of runny nose...but wasnt really sick...we dont take him out that much ...but that day we decided that we were gonna go visit my mom....while we were there...my dad who always plays with my baby tells me that he thinks my boy has a stomach ache...i thought thats not possible because i didnt give him anything that would upset his tummy...later that day...at about 5 or 6 pm...he started to get really tired...so i thought it was probably form him playing and running around...then he started to feel fuzzy and have a little of a wimper...all of a sudden he just feels really hot...and started shaking....with his eyes rolled up...it got me so scared...again...i didnt know what i should do but what the nurses told me the first time i was at the hospital...call 911...and i did...his seizure didnt even last a minute...it was about 2 to 3 seconds...the first time as well...the minute we we're at the hospital he was fine again...except that he was just tired out of the seizures...again the DRs and Nurses did all the test but didnt find anything serious too...so we were let home...they said that it could just be febrile seizures and that babies tend to have these but will outgrow it after 2 years old or something...im scared to the point where i dont want to leave him out of my sight....and the reason why i decided not to work until he turns at least 4 or 5 years....

its difficult to figure out because our family does not have epilypsi*, or seizures history....i want to know what is causing it...because im the one who feeds him and i dont give him anything that will upset his tummy...gosh...im so stressed...and so scared that it will happen again...which im praying it wont...what should i do to prevent it from happening and has anyone experienced this before...please share..so i wont be so scared and know what to do in the future...if it should happen again...so i can be prepared....

thanks alot for those who replied and sharing and giving me advices....much love to all you and god bless...

I am a mom of a son who had febrile seizures and have also been in nursing school and my son's father is an epileptic.

Here's what I've learned:  Epilepsy isn't a hereditary event.  Febrile seizures are cause by a rapid spike in fever and the body's way to compensate for rapid temp increase.  Febrile seizures will be outgrown.  They are scary as hell and no matter who tells you what, call an Ambulance if you are too scared to handle it on your own.

The difference between epilepsy and febrile seizures is that febrile are accompanied by a fever and are predictable.  Your son is likely to have more with fevers, but may never have another one again.  Keep him safe during the seizure, but never restrain him and please NEVER try to put anything in his mouth.  If he seizes, put a pillow under his hed, lie him down and remove everything in the environment that he may hit, and PLACE HIM ON HIS SIDE...this is incase he throws up.  That is the biggest danger in any seizure, if he throws up on his back he can aspirate and that is deadly!

I have found that ibuprofen is more effective than tylenol for the first dose in fever control...meaning, my son never had a febrile when I gave him ibuprofen first.  You can also alternate tylenol and ibuprofen for a stubborn temp.  The current advice I've been given is to not give anything for a fever lower than 101 b/c the fever is needed to aide in healing the body.  Also, use measures other than meds to reduce fever (popcycles, cool cloth on arteries: back of neck, crook of arms and on writs and ankles, and nice cool baths).  I've also learned recently that cold sprite is good for a child with fever who isn't eating b/c the body needs that glucose.  So, though I don't give my kids soda, I do when they're sick.

I also learned it is normal to stop breathing and to see blue lips during a seizure, but CPR is not necessary unless this goes on for more than a minute.

I don't care how much I know or how used to it I may get.  If any of my kids have a febrile...I'll call 911 because you never know.  One EMS worker told me that sometimes the emergency is the panic of the parent and they are there to help us.

I hope this helps!
