My husband's grandmother, whom everyone called Grandmother, just passed away. We got the call at one this morning. I'm completely devastated. I'd met Rolan through his sister, Andrea. We used to be really close, so I'd known their grandmother since I was in middle school and she's like my own. She used to host big Sunday dinners at her house for lunch every week and that was where the whole family would gather to catch up. She'd had a massive stroke about five months ago, and could have thrived under different circumstances, but my husband and I weren't in a position to do anything about it, because it was up to her children (my husband's mother and her siblings), and anyone else's opinions were of no use to them. I loved her with all my heart. After I had Hayden and Grandmother, my MIL, and SIL came to the hospital, I'd just burst into tears. While everyone else was telling me, "Don't cry, it's gonna be okay," she was the only one who said, "No, baby. You go ahead and cry. You take the time you need and you feel the things you feel. You cry all that you need to." She was just like that. Always giving advice (sometimes, whether we wanted it or not), but she really was a sweet, loving woman who will be soarly missed. Once she told me how happy it made her to hear Rolan tell me, while in her presence, "You look beauitful no matter what you do with your hair." (I was asking whether or not I should cut my hair.) She said that that was the kind of things she'd always hoped for for her children and grandchildren. Before we got together, Rolan was always a bit of a hermit, you see. We kind of pulled each other in different directions: I got him to go out a little more; he got me to stay home a little more. But we end up just working, even with our differences.
