I recently joined the Freecycling network.  If you don't know what it is, it's a network for people to give away their junk for free and maybe get something for free.  If you have things like clothing, old bikes, etc. you post it and someone can come and get it.  I joined to get rid of some of my mountains of crap.  But now it has become a source of constant annoyance.  You have plenty of good people giving away things like I mentioned before and plenty of decent people posting things they are looking for, BUT, this has become a place for total,  lazy losers to ask for things that I feel they have no business asking for.  Like for instance--"Does anyone have a working laptop in great shape?" or "Does anyone have a good used car in working order because I can't afford one and I want one so I don't have to walk to work".  WTF!!  Or we have the "Does anyone have a really nice sofa I could have, but it has to be blue and clean, and fairly new and from a smoke free, pet free environment."  Sure lady, do you want a matching love seat with that?   And today--"My son's need new winter coats, preferably a heavy Steelers jacket" Ok, I want a Prada handbag, but alas, I suffer. Or another favorite recently posted-- "I want to take all 6 of my kids to Hershey Park, can anyone give me some tickets?"  I want to take me husband to Italy, can anyone give me some tickets? have a newsflash for you--save the money for a car, or a laptop, or a new blue sofa.  Don't make your self look like an idiot by asking for free.  None of us have all the money to do everything we want to do, that's call life and you deal with the cards your given.

I quit using free cycle for that reason. It was driving me nuts. People here were asking for cars, pure bred dogs, TV's, Riding lawn mowers. Are you kidding me?  99% of the time it's "I want or I need".

Well, I love freecycle and get a warm feeling when someone posts a need and I'm able to provide that thing. But I will admit I've laughed many times when reading requests. I myself requested an exercise bike for my hubby right after knee replacement and got one. I'm thankful for it, even though it's not a new model by any stretch. It does the trick. That was a "luxury item" to request and I really didn't expect anyone to provide one, but the owner was moving away and didn't want to bother taking it.

The moderators of our group have a standard warning they often post when someone has made a request for something expensive. (They didn't post it in answer to my exercise bike request, but I've seen it show up when someone posted a request for a car and when someone posted a request for a TRAILOR HOUSE and when someone posts a request that is specific that they want something that suits their high standards.) It warns posters that freecycle is not a shopping service and that other freecyclers remember who posts such things and stop reading that person's posts. It's a good warning and it usually gets the point across.

Try to take some amusement in the fact that the world is full of people who want to get something for nothing and things like freecycle attract that kind in droves. Laugh when you read things they have posted.

I also posted a request for plant starts last spring and lots of people invited me to come over with my shovel and help thin their gardens. I planted a nice variety of perennials in my own garden. That's what freecycle is for, not a car or a trailor house.

Exactly, freecycle is not a shopping service.  It's a a great thing 99% of the time.
