When Cafemom asked me to start a team for the Save Lids To save Lives drive, I knew that CM was the perfect venue for raising awareness for breast cancer. I knew that if I started a group people would join. After all I have an amazing friend list full of women who stand tall for their causes. What I didn’t expect was how many people would join that I didn’t know. Already I have learned so much about the wonderful women who share this space with me daily. I have already seen some great ideas for lid drives in local communities. I have heard from women all over the café who don’t have time to get seriously involved in a big project but still want to do their part. I have heard from children who are promising to collect lids from their fellow students at lunch time. It is amazing and a bit overwhelming.
Now that more of the team leaders have been posted on the awareness page. I am more excited than ever about this project. While some of these moms are people I have never met, others read like a who’s who in cafemom society. They are the ones you always see at the fore front of community projects like this. I feel certain that this campaign is going to be major success for all who participate.
I will totally admit to being ignorant about breast cancer. In the past week doing research for my team, I have made some startling discoveries. I have also made some good friends. There are members of this online community who have answers to your questions and concerns, I urge you to seek them out. A simple search for “breast cancer” will reveal a plethora of resources right here on cafemom. Take advantage of them.
The amazing thing about a project like this is that if each person does only what she can, great strides will be made. Think that you won’t make a difference? Think again! If you convince one women to do a self examination, you may help save a single life, maybe even your own. When was the last time you squished your bubs? Think that isn’t much? Think again. If you tell just one person and she tells just one person, and she tells just one person… Look at the difference you will have made. That is a chain of life that will never end.
If you don’t think you can raise money, you can. Even if you only return a few lids to this drive. They will be added to the few lids of many many others making your few cents into a thousands, maybe millions of dollars.
A single person can touch the lives of others in many ways. How many profiles do you visit in a week? How many chatters do you leave? To make a difference, you don’t need to do anything more than click the join hands button when you run across it on some mom’s page. Just a little button that says, “ I support you, I’ll be your friend.”
The best part is that this goes way beyond CafeMom. You can share this message with your grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, cousins, nieces and friends. How many of those do you have? Think you don’t have what it takes to reach a lot of people. Too much time, too much work. A single email to all the women in your address book and look what you will have accomplished. Because they have address books too. The message is short. ‘Know your risk factors. Get checked. Early detection is the key to winning. Tell this to everyone you know.’ Oh, and if you happen to eat yogurt, save those little pink lids. Each one is worth $.10 and together with the rest of ours, could be worth 1.5 million dollars.
I can’t wait to see where this is going. I know how it will end. The complete eradication of this horrific disease. It can happen if we all take just one brief moment to join hands and stand together.
So… Will you help us? http://www.cafemom.com/group/savelidstosavelives
