How many of you have had a loved one affected by cancer? Cancer is a general term for more than 100 diseases that are characterized by uncontrolled abnormal growth of cells. According to the Cancer Sourcebook for women, one out of every five deaths in the United States is from cancer. This means cancer is a serious disease that should not be ignored. Because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month I wanted to share with you the specific cancer that has affected my family. Today I will give you a little inset to what breast cancer is, women and the disease, and also how to early detect and be safe from the disease.

Even though October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, how many people are actually awareness of what's going on?

First Main Point: What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men can get breast cancer too. The American Cancer Society states, "Breast cancer is a complex and devastating disease and the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women in the U.S today."

In the second point, I would like to talk about the many women around the world affected by breast cancer.

Second Main Point: How many women get breast cancer?
According to the National Breast Institute, right now there are slightly over 2 million women living in the United States who have been treated for breast cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. Many factors such as age, family history, reproductive and menstrual history and race plays a major part when it comes to women and cancer.

Now you know the statistics, let me tell you how to early detect breast cancer and be safe.

Third Main Point: How can you save yourself before it's too late?
When breast cancer is found and treated early, a woman has more treatment choices and a good chance of complete recovery. Follow guidelines for early breast cancer detection.

In summary breast cancer is serious and should not be ignored. Having breast cancer doesn't mean a woman can't live a normal life. Early detection can ensure and early survival rate. The goal is to find the cancer before it starts to cause symptoms. My grandma was lucky enough to detect it at an early stage. It still is a battle that she must face every day. It doesn't matter the size of the breast or your age. Before this month is over, try to make someone aware of this disease like I have for you.

I also have to thank you for doing your part in educating others.  I haven't had anyone close to me experience any form of cancer.  But that is not stopping me, I am now just starting to get on the band wagon. I am doing this by walking in my hometown on October 18th.
