Tolerance needed for hunters, vegans

Grant Triplett

I detest pro-lifers yet I can't stand pro-choicers.

No, I'm not talking about the debate on whether or not humans should or shouldn't die; I'm talking about animals.

I killed a baby deer once. I've also smashed a hamster with a hammer and stabbed a turtle to death. I even punted a baby fox. Some might consider this inhumane and grotesque. Others might think I was just trying to kill my own meal. Either way, the debate is pointless....

This was in today's Daily Nebraskan, UNL's newspaper.

As a happy Omnivore, I find myself agreeing with most of the author's points.

However, I do care how my meat lives and dies...I support the free-range, grass-fed, humanely treated, local meats.

While I disagree with many of his points.  Many of them.  A lot.  Especially when he says things like, "...compelling argument won't change my mind," and when he uses the vegicide argument (the one I hate the most as it HOLDS NO WATER!, ugh).

Wait, I said "while," there's more...  Oh yes, while I disagree with many of his points, I more respect the idea of animals as food by hunting or, as in your case, at least bought free-range, humanely treat, veg fed etc.  And I ask for vegan empathy as well.  Things like "you're killing plants!" don't really qualify.

I'm not a vegan nor a vegetarian, but I am against hunting as a sport.  I think hunting was okay back in the day when your daddy was named Charles Ingalls.  Now, I just don't get it.  I can understand people who actually kill the animal for food, but when it turned into a "sport" it made me sick.  Maybe I've just seen Bambi one too many times.  *shrug*

Interesting. My husband and I don't hunt for trophy, we hunt for meat. And boy is it tasty. It's a really nice time to spend together-target shooting or hunting. Our son will help me make meals, today was bbq'd venison steaks-my last pack from last season. It also helps control the population and keep the herds disease free. We buy very little store bought meat-mainly smoked products (bacon, ham) because we aren't able to smoke our own. Everything else is farm raised, we know what it ate and what it did not-no paylene! I can veggies too and I don't feel bad about pulling them out of the ground, skinning them and boiling them in hot jars.

Uh, how?  Because generally, hunters are NOT going after the ill.  You're going after the nice, big kill.  If anything, you remove their stronger members to make the herd weaker.
Really, I'd like to hear an explanation.

I agree with you!  I try to buy the most "humane" meat/dairy I can.  Just because it says its organic dosent mean the animals weren't treated like crap!

Did that article even have a point?....I'm not being a jerk, I'm seriously asking.

I agree with you MamaK, I also care about how my meat lives and dies. We live in an area where hunting is a huge part of every day life, and my husband doesn't hunt, I'm not sure if he'll ever take it up, but we get fresh venison and bear meat from our friends when they have a good hunting season. We are going to start raising some kind of animal for meat next summer, we're trying to decide between rabbits, chickens, or some kind of larger animal. But I am very much against raising animals in tight, unhealthy living quarters, or doing hunting as a sport. My husband's boss does bear baiting, which is very controversial around here - some people are strongly in favor of it, and vice versa. I am on the other side of the aisle on that one, and I get seriously PO'd when I hear about people baiting bears. I guess I like to think that we still have a spot on the food chain, and I think that we should work a little and have a very good reason for taking the life of a wild creature. Sorry I went off on a rant!

Momma...

My husbands family raises their own food. They don't give it to me for free... they ask me for payment. And they don't ask for cheap payment either. I spent 8 dollars on a whole chicken. Yeah I never bought from family again. But as for hunting my great grandfather was Native American and we learned to respect our kill. Thank it for its life and only take what you need to survive.
