Here's a picture of baby with her blue-haired daddy. (And I bought brown hair dye this afternoon, so naybe tomorrow he'll be looking almost normal).
Another picuture:
The news is all good - little Alexzandra is off of oxygen and breathing room air - yay! She was on 80% then 45%, then 32%. Room air is 21%. So that is just FANTASTIC news today.
She's also been moved from an open isolette to a closed isolette. I know that sounds like a step in the wrong direction, but actually it's not. They leave critically ill babies in open isolettes so they can get to them quickly if need be. And of course a "closed" isolette is warmer and keeps more germs away.
She's eating and peeing and pooping, all very important stuff. She actually nursed at the breast for a few minutes today - which was a real boost for mom. Her color is better, and I guess she belches like a truck driver. And she sneezed, which her parents said was absolutely adorable.
Hopefully she will be released in 7 days, and mom and baby plan to stay at our house for a week after that, because mom lives 3 hours away from the NICU, and wants to be close while she builds confidence.
Then :-( sadly mom and baby will go home, and daddy will have to stay here. He's on his last shot for a high school education, and attendance counts. He has a four day weekend over halloween, so we'll keep reminding him that he'll get to visit very soon.
Let me just add.... the kids have been staying here for the past few days, and my step-son's girlfriend is a beautiful young woman, very mature for her age, sensible and really quite lovely. She has a strong focus on education, swim team, and has realistic future goals. I think that's a bonus.
