So, last week I was at a day long Senior Health Fair, schmoozing it up with the over 70 crowd and having a nice time. Towards the end of the day, the crowd started to wind down and it got boring....right before I packed up, an elderly gentleman shuffled to the table to pick up some materials & I launched into my usual spiel: "Hi, my name is Donna, I am with MassMedLine, we're a pharmacy outreach program.....blah blah blah...".
He was slightly bent at the waist with wrinkled clothing that was not new. He smiled & in a very soft voice, started chatting with me about the cost of meds, how hard things are for seniors, how many seniors keep their head in the sand & don't want to look at the realities of life sometimes.......I'm nodding & agreeing & smiling...he then somehow morphs into talking about "god" and now I am thinking: "Oh man...sigh..i am too tired for this right now", but I am still smiling and noddin.....I have to lean in because his voice was SO soft I could barely hear him above the din in the auditorium....he starts to talk about "wisdom & the important balance in life of past, present & future & how one cannot be without the others" and now I start listening more carefully....
He tells me a story about being in the war (had to be WWII) and how he had to make a deal with god for his life, promising that if god got him through this alive, he would spread the joy of god.....he said to me: "He did, so I do". And then he starts in again about how important "seeking wisdom" is to happiness and peace and fulfillment....and he looks me in the eye and says: "You are a wise woman".
I was startled and just said: "Well thank you. Wisdom is important to me too". He said: "Yes, I know and you are seeking wisdom in your life right now, aren't you? I can see that in your eyes". Yikes! He then said: "You were very wise as a child but there was no one there to nurture that or for you to compare yourself to so you didn't know it. And now you are seeking to get back to something in your life you lost" HOLY CRAP -I was speechless......and then he said: "You have always been wise. You were a nun in a past life, a nun high up in her order, a very wise nun". Now, I am practically falling off my chair...I told him that I believe that could be true.....
I stood up and shook his hand and said: "Thank you, I really needed to hear this today". He smiled, held my hand for an extra second, looked me in the eyes and said: "I know, that's why I came over here to see you." And he shuffled away, smiling.

Wow...thats all I have. I truley believe the elderly and children have an extra connection to God...ya know. Like somewhere in the middle of our lives we lose it only to gain it back in later years. Wow donna, what a story.
