I am going to New York this weekend for the wedding of my long time friend. We have known each other since Kindergarten. She is getting married in the town we grew up in.

As the trip nears, I keep thinking of all the places I want to share with my husband: my house, the local pizza parlor, the park where I fell riding my bike, the 7-11 my friends and I used to hang out at after school. All these places made me start thinking of highschool and the teachers I had over the years.

Two teachers really stood out for me, Mr. Hailey and Mrs. Garzione. In highschool, I had good grades for the most part, had fairly good behavior, good manners, etc. However, I had very low self esteem and was struggling to figure out where I fit in, which led to many poor choices throughout my high school years. These teachers, though well aware of my poor choices, liked me anyway and were always there to offer guidance  without judgement. It was probably their demeanor which led me into the field of counseling, with the desire to understand and guide other teens. I always felt that these two teachers saw past my stupid decisions to who I was inside. I believe their non judgemental attitudes allowed that person inside to shine through and helped me become who I am today.

How have you been inspired by a teacher in your past?

I TOTALLY AGREE! I MYSELF NEVER HAD ONE OF THOSE BUT MY DAUGHTER IS A AN ENGLISH TEACHER AT AN ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL HERE IN MIAMI, SHE HAS THE WORST OF EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL, BUT SHE MAKES IT A POINT TO GET TO KNOW THEM PERSONALLY AND NOT ONLY TEACH THEM BUT BEFRIEND THEM.
