The boys are at school and Little Miss S is having a breathing treatment. I have a few minutes and I need some advice.

Have any of you put your children on a gluten-free diet? If you know me or my family, we are completely off of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives.  We did this instead of putting Funny Man I, my seven year old, on Ritalin. Here is the google list of articles when I googled Food Coloring and hyperactivity.  There are many similarities!

It has helped out a lot, but he is having issues at school still. I ran into an old friend who took gluten out of his son's diet and all of his "focus" issues at school are gone!! So I am looking for more outside help. I am also looking into getting his eyes checked, I am researching vision deficits. First step is an eye test with an optometrist. Then start with a plan and an IEP for him.

So there are two parts to this step one: Vision test and gluten free diet.

Anybody out there with some words of wisdom???

If you need a place to shop WHOLE FOODS has a lot of Gluten free food too. I am trying a no food coloring diet with EMMA. It helps out a bunch. Emma has extreme high energy and I do not need to increase it with food coloring. In Madison we actually have a Gluten free bakery here i have not tried it yet.

I agree with you the food coloring makes a HUGE difference, my kids get none unless they for example they eat birthday cake and if the icing has alot of food colors WOW their whole demeanor changes. I would LOVE to try the gluten free on my son but he is very picky and has eating issues to begin with so I don't even know where to start except we have an apt. with a D.A.N. Dr. in Dec. But I believe detox and moderating diet make alot of difference.

Hi, I noticed that the link for Feingold info takes one to a page of Google searches. The only place to get accurate and up to date info on the diet is at the support group's website: www.feingold.org I've been using the diet for many years and am a member of the association. Often people do not get the results expected because they are still getting items that contribute to the problem. To give it a good trial, one must eliminate all food dyes, artificial flavorings (such as vanillin), BHA, BHT, TBHQ, Aspartame and salicylates for at least 4-6 weeks. This would include fragrances, things applied to the skin, medications and things like toothpaste. To know that one is really eliminating them is by using the foodlist published by the association. Food ingredients, unfortunately cannot be counted on to list them all.
