Ridiculous Claim #1: "BECAUSE" Global Warming Is A Hoax

I'm going to start a series of journals outlining various arguments that I feel hold no water in the hopes that someone can logically explain them to me.  Please note that I will be looking at one illogical argument supporting a position, this is not to say that the, in this case, global warming hoax position is not valid, but that this particular argument is useless.

Arguement One: Justifying the further destruction and apathy regarding the health of our planet because global warming is a hoax, (ie using lots of styrofoam, plastic bags, not recycling, not caring about the planet is fine because global warming isn't man made).

So "you" feel that global warming isn't real, is a hoax, isn't man made, whatever.  There are valid arguments to support this, that's fine.  But using this argument to justify environmental hazards is absurd because even if we take global warming out of the list of concerns, we are still left with a sad, sick planet that needs love and attention.  It is undeniable that the air is polluted, ozone is depleted, oceans contaminated, animals are poisoned, and that the general environment is deteriorating.  And it is also undeniable that man made chemicals, industries, and abuse of our planet have everything to do with this.

So PLEASE reconsider recycling, reusing, and caring for our world because, global warming or not, our planet is sick and NEEDS our help and compassion.

Thank you for your time.

Although recycling some things (metals, plastics, rubber, etc.) makes a great deal of sense, the recycling of paper is probably more of a problem that a help. The primary constituent of paper is carbon and we need sequester as much carbon as possible in the carbon sink so that it doesn't oxidize and become CO2 and contribute to AGW. Paper in a land fill is carbon that will take many years for the natural carbon cycle to bring back up to atmospheric CO2. Another issue with paper recycling is that it takes a great deal of energy to recycle it. It has to be picked up and taken to the center and then processed and that costs more energy and pollution than recycling it saves.

Just today I saw someone in the Questions & Answers section say that they don't use cloth grocery bags because global warming isn't true.  I think my jaw actually hit the floor when I read that comment.  Ridiculous!  Even if you don't believe in global warming, you can still reduce your impact on the planet.  There's no need to be purposefully destructive.

Great post, Jellyphish.  I actually really, really like my cloth grocery bags - no more broken jars of jelly!  If I happen to get plastic bags, I certainly reuse them.  They're great for picking up dog doo, using as garbage bags for the vehicle, work great as garbage bags in the bathroom, etc.  Plus I'm not buying bags for each of these purposes.  I also bought a PUR water filter over the summer and I love it.  No more bottled water.  And yes - global warming IS man made.  Anybody who thinks it's a hoax needs to watch An Inconvenient Truth.

I don't see how someone can say they don't believe in global warming. I just want to smack them and say..."look around you, feel the air. Are you freaking blind?" lol!

I love recycling. It gives me something to do and I know I'm doing a great thing for the planet.

Whether or not you believe in global warming, it makes sense to:

Save energy, Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

Most of the energy saving tips I use are money saving, too.  I hang my laundry and live in a passive solar house. I do it because it saves MONEY.  I buy used whenever I can, I don't waste anything, I drive a small, energy-efficient car.  All of it means more money in MY pocket.  I can pick up tote bags for 50 cents at the thrift shop.  The grocery store gives me 5 cents off each bag I use.  10 uses and they have paid for themselves, 20 uses and I'm ahead. Not to mention they don't tear like the plastic bags do.

Considering the current financial times we live in, it just makes sense.
