alot of people are scared into not wanting this! telling them that the government will be in control of your health care! it's not so! it's just us telling the government that all people deserve to be able to recieve health care! there is a great documentry about universal health care, it's call Sicko.  it shows us how Americans who illegaly go into other countries (including Cuba, one of our so called enemies) can get better health care than here in America, and at no upfront cost or bills! it comes out of tax dollars, which in the long run would be cheaper than paying for insurance then paying for co-pays, then paying for prescriptions! not to mention if you needed surgery or a stay in the hospital!

Plus, as it says in the video, 1/3 of what we are paying in health care cost doesn't go to the actual care. It's going to the CEOS etc. Sad huh?

Thanks for putting that out there. More need to be educated on what UHC actually is...instead of being scared by what it isn't.

With all due respect this is not about accountability and responsibility. This is about regular, middle class, hard working people that have been responsible but still can't get their health care needs met because the current system is terribly flawed.

My parents are an excellent example. My father is self employed, which means that he has to pay for his own insurance and he has to pay for his employees insurance. He can't get an affordable plan for his employees because he does not employ enough people to spread out the cost. His employees opted not to have insurance because their only options were way too expensive. He did purchase insurance for himself and my mother. My mother's monthly expense for medication was $300 or more - despite the purchase of insurance. Because my mother is diabetic and has heart disease, the insurance company kept raising the rates. They paid the $1000 dollars a month, then they paid the $1500 a month and so on, until, at $3000 a month, it  became impossible to afford. My father has worked very hard his entire life. He has run a successful business for several years - yet he can barely afford to take my mother to the doctor - forget about the big screen TV, they don't have one.

Also, because they had to cancel their insurance, or rather were squeezed out of it, when my mother had a heart attack last summer, the hospital had to absorb much of the cost. Who will be paying for that? The taxpayer that's who. If their insurance had been affordable though, they would have, like responsible people, paid for it themselves.

Oct. 12, 2008 at 11:47 PM Another perk is if there was universal health care than employers can pay their employees more. We have public schools, public libraries, public services like police and fire, why not medical like all the other developed nations.
