This is not a debate, just something I've noticed.
For a long time, I stopped going to church. I just "didnt have time".... My oldest is in CCD and attending church is part of the curriculum... not that it should be mandatory that I have to bring him, I should want to bring him... which I do... ANYWAY...Im sitting there & the last few times I've gone, I've noticed that people are attending in jeans!!! How hard is it to put on a nice pair of slacks or something??? I know God doesnt judge you for what you're wearing... at least youre going right? But I was brought up where you dont wear "street clothes" to church. Even the altar boys/girls... they're wearing jeans & flip flops/sandals & their hair doesnt even look brushed! IDK, maybe its just me....
And just so you all know Im not perfect, Do your young children "misbehave" during church? My son is 7... today he was slouching, kicking the bench infront of us, huffing so loud I swear the priest heard him... and then whispering loudly "I didnt get enough sleep last night". Then he had to go to the bathroom, I let him go... he comes running back in & then makes a gun with his fingers that he points at a friend at the other side of the church!!! Not in an "Im gunna kill you" sorta way, like they were playing a game or something! I was mortified to say the least... and this is every time we go... only this is the 1st time he spotted a friend! I wanted to take him outside & beat him with a bible! How do your kids act??? Please tell me Im not alone! I just dont understand why he cant sit still & behave for 1 hour!!! Is it really too much to ask?
Comments:
I go to church to worship God, not a fashion show. If people are more focused on what I'm wearing than they are God, that's their problem, not mine.
I know what you mean on the clothes-we're Lutheran & basically our services are almost exactly the same as yours. We've started a Saturday night service, which I usually attend. It's "casual dress" but I can't bring myself to wear jeans or flip flops. I'll wear khaki's and a sweater or a dress. To me, it's respectful. Since we moved, I had a hard time getting back into the flow of this church (much different from the one I went to the last 5 years) but it's my "home church" so I pretty much have to go there. I told myself the busy excuse and decided-1 hour a week for God is do-able so now we're attending more regularly.. I take my 2 1/2 year old. Yes, he gets a little antsy but he's learning. Can you bring your 7 year old some activities, even church related like word searches? I would explain before going in that he needs to behave and have a quiet voice. Just keep working at it.

I wear nice jeans to church sometimes because I cannot afford very nice church clothes. i always look nice, with heels and my hair done, so it is a dressy casual look. I do think she should at least look nice even if you can't afford a nice suit or dress. Flip-flops though? Eeeek! No way jose! I don't even wear sandals to church unless they are my heels and it is summer.
As for the kids, do you have children's church? We are Southern Baptist and my church offers children's church which is a kid friendly version of the adult service for kids grade 3 and under. Check into it! Also, make misbehaving in church a bad thing. Don't let him do it. Discipline him immediately and also bring some toys and coloring books for him. 7 is a little young to expect them to be perfect angels and while I beleive children should learn to love our Christ from birth, it won't affect him to be allowed to quietly color and play during the service until he gets some more impulse control and grows out of the "ants in the pants" stage!
