Last night, I had a parent-teacher conference for Lydia. Just a routine, "How's my kid?" kind of thing.
I'd never really been able to talk about Lydia's academic performance, because she started Kindergarten after Christmas, so we missed the whole conference thing, and my multiple attempts at getting in touch with her Kindgergarten teacher to discuss it never yielded much in the way of results. So basically, I see what she can do, and I work with her, but I had NO idea if her abilities were above or below the normal level for a first-grader.
Yeah, apparently, they're above. Way above. Lydia is top of her class in EVERYTHING. She just won the Responsibility Award for her class, which is apparently a BIG DEAL. Her teacher said she won it "Because she takes care of EVERY KID in this class." She went on and on for an hour about how wonderful Lydia is...showing us her perfect scores on all this work she did, explaining that even though the highest-level reading group only goes so high, she'll let her keep going as high as she can, and won't hold her back.
She said "Every parent that comes in here thinks that their kid is Gifted and Talented. And they all ARE, in their own ways. But if I could pick ONE student that IS G/T, in art, math, science, reading, writing, all-around, that would be Lydia. Hands-down."
She said that she was going over her file, and was really proud, and impressed, and THEN she realized that Lydia's only SIX. Most of the kids in her class are 7, and for Lydia to be so far ahead, academically and socially, of these kids, some of whom have studied abroad, blew her away. She said she's got a million friends, and always looks so neat and well-put-together.
This whole time, Lydia's dad is sitting there looking at his watch, nodding and grunting occasionally. I really don't get him. I was about to burst out of my skin, I was so proud. I could have sat and listened to that stuff all night.

Bragging rights are all yours...until Tuesday! (That's when my Poodle has her conference) : ) Congrats on your amazing kid. Of course, she's bound to be a smarty with you as her mom. *wink*
