I am officially declaring myself the Queen of Procrastination. I have always excelled at this particular skill and I proudly declare this to all who ask. Being a stay-at-home mom I don't get much of a chance to show off how well I procrastinate, in school and even in my former job I had plenty of chances to practice and hone my skill. I tell you all this to tell you about my biggest example of procrastination to date, and how I am finally trying to complete the goals I set a few years ago.
We have been living in our home for a little more than two years, and have succeeded in completing only a few projects (there was quite a list when we bought the place). The most important thing to do was paint the bedrooms, which we completed the week after we bought the house. I would not move in until after all of the rooms had a new coat of paint. We decided to compromise and painted all the bedrooms (3), the hallway (1), and the bathrooms (2). Leaving us with the living room and the kitchen/dining room to complete sometime in the near future (we haven't done any of the trim either). The house wasn't to bad when we moved in, it was just beige. Actually, to be more precise, it was biscuit, you know that color that the use on appliances that aren't white, but just barely. And it wasn't just the walls that were biscuit, the carpet, trim, doors (except the front and back doors), and even the exterior were all this lovely biscuit color. I say all the floors, but that isn't exactly right, the bathrooms have this beautiful brown tile. The kitchen, well the kitchen floors are an entirely different story. They are brown and yellow patterned linoleum. Yes, my house was built in 1980 at the height of brown, harvest gold, avacado green...I'm sure I could go on for hours.
So back to what I was saying... we intended on painting the living room and refurbishing the kitchen sometime in the near future. I say refurbishing because the cabinets and the floor all needed to be changed. I didn't plan for it to be a big job, just some paint for the cabinets, new floors (of some kind), and new tile counters.
Well now is the time to work on crossing off another project. Two weeks ago I decided that I had to get the kitchen done before my in-laws come to visit (for Thanksgiving). So I spent the first week picking out colors and figuring out what I would be able to do in a short period of time. Let me tell you, I have high hopes, high apple pie in the sky hopes. I have spent the last week taking off cabinet doors (hubby likes that, he no longer bangs his head on open cabinet doors), sanding down the finish, priming, and painting the doors and the upper cabinet. We will be putting the doors back on the upper cabinet this evening and I will finish painting the outside of the doors tomorrow. This weekend I have promised my son that he can help me with the lower cabinet, so I will hold off on that for now. Next on the list is the upper cabinet on the other wall and then the lower cabinet and that side. After the cabinets are complete, mom and i will start working on the walls. After the walls, we are going to peel up the linoleum, scrape off all the *ahem* "stuff", and then paint the bare concrete floors a dark blue. We have a date (Nov. 8) for doing the floors because my hubby needs to take personal day so he can be here to help move appliances. After we finish the floors I should have just enough time to clean the house from top to bottom before hubby's family will be here sometime around the 20th of Nov. Hooray! I work much better with a deadline.
Now to think about my living room. Anybody have some scaffolding? I have sixteen foot ceilings, which translates to sixteen foot walls, which is much to high even for tall hubby to reach. But don't worry we will get to it soon...
