I play Mobsters on MySpace. For anyone who has never played, it fits the typical mafia stereotype. You have a group of mobsters and you kill people for money, place hits and collect bounties on the hits you make. Well, yesterday I got a newsfeed in the game that one of our fellow players was killed in Iraq. I had to stop playing at that point, I was so bummed out. I mean, here we are, sitting in our homes on our computers playing a game where we kill people. This soldier, who also played the game, lost his life fighting for the rights and freedoms that we have to sit in our homes on our computers playing a game where we kill people. It was so overwhelming. Even though I did not know this man personally, I just felt so horrible to get that reality check. I haven't been back in the game yet. I am sure I will continue playing, but I will have that in the back of my mind from now on. The reality is, if not for the bravery and dedication of our armed forces, we wouldn't have the opportunity to engage in virtual reality.
