Why did we try to scare the cra.. out of each other as kids?

As a kid, I grew up in a NYC housing development. A group of us kids would gather on the common garden areas and playgrounds, and play games, bring our Barbie dolls and share stories. This post reminded me of a rather long string of seances ???where we tried to levitate each other, play 8 Ball and tell each other scary stories of creepy phone calls, unknown intruders in houses and other tales that would really not sit well for Halloween; when it got dark early and we each had to treak our way back into apartment buildings, up elevators and safely into our homes......do kids still do this? Or am I just old?
