I just can't get nictitating membranes out of my mind. When I first took biology well over 20 years ago, one of the cool things, to me, was the "third eyelid" that some animals have. Just the words "nictitating membranes" flow so pleasurably, these are some of the words I like the sound of, like a melody in my mind.

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing up close a two toed sloth for the first time. I was drawn to her nictitating membrane protecting her eye. I hadn't heard of or thought of the words in so many years, but these came flooding back to me. The biologist was shocked someone knew what it was and the proper words for it.

Tonight while trick or treating with my family, we saw a turtle that belonged to my son's teacher. She had it at home, treating it for an infection, and was putting eye drops on his nictitating membrane. There it was again, nictitating membranes.

I couldn't sleep, I had to google it to read up on it again. So beautiful...nictitating membranes.

Ahhhh, now I can sleep...

I had to laugh. We are a house full of all kinds of science geeks. Well, some of us. I get stuck on things too and  I start seeing them everywhere. I will mention this to my kids and I know at least two of them will laugh and then also get stuck on that term as well. It's like a song that gets stuck in your head for no apparent reason.

LOL!!!  I enjoy polychaete and nudibranch personally.  Duodenum is a definite loser.  I dislike that one.  ha ha.

Oooooh, nudibranch, that rolls off the tongue nicely, I haven't thought of that in years...I need another word or two to get this out of my head!

Nudibranch, nudibranch, nudibranch....
