The lights have gone out, the campaign has faded. People are pulling bumper stickers of support off of their cars and bringing in yard signs. November 5th is historically a day of huge contrast; great disappointment for some and elated feelings for others.
But before we revel in our victory or riot in distress- let us remember the heart of our country.
Too often are we divided by our feelings. Issues such as religion and sexual orientation spark passion in most and it's only normal for us to feel that division. Unfortunately, we as a nation have forgotten how to be united despite the things that separate us.
Last night, Senator John McCain made a speech urging everyone to come together and fight for the progress we so desperately need. He reminded us that we are all Americans, regardless of which campaign we supported. Because of the nature of this election season, it was very easy for us to forget that we all share a common vision- the improvement of the state of living for all Americans. President Elect Barack Obama had a similar message- speak out. Do not be complacent in the rebuilding of our nation.
It's time to move on from the negative tone that has been cast over our Country during these campaigns. Instead of dwelling on why our new president elect is the wrong choice or how he must have stole the vote- how about we come together and make a difference. Use our voice for good and not to complain about things we cannot change.
I urge you to remain friends with those who differed in their candidate choice this year- do not let this be one more thing that divides us. We should all be proud of the progress this election has made for our country. Only half a century ago we were a country of separation. We were defined by our views on race.
Imagine the message we have sent to the world- we have risen above those mistakes and accept the diversity that is the foundation of our country. This should be our mantra as we welcome in a new president and rejoin as a United States of America.
