Today when I let Rob, my cat in, I felt something matted on his neck. I thought it was just something gross he got into, and I mentioned it to my husband and forgot about it.

Paul looked at him and found the matting was dried pus (not blood), and there is an OPEN HOLE in the cat's neck. It's not bleeding, it doesn't look bloody, it just looks like... a hole in his skin. All the hair is gone from the area. Both of us half-screamed and jumped away the first time we saw it. It looks like a pore or a fish mouth. I've never seen anything like it. Paul called the emergency vet number and they told him to come tomorrow during walk-in hours. I don't think they grasp the bizarre-ness of a gaping hole in my cat. YOU CAN LOOK INSIDE IT.

In the above picture, he's just relaxing. He isn't lethargic and doesn't seem to be in any pain, but we have to keep him from scratching at it.

We got a "free Kitten" from a farm once. It had a lump on its neck. We thought nothing of it really until something crawled out of the lump. We freaked out and took it to the vet. The vet told us it was a GRUB! Guess the cat had a wound and the grub/bug got in, laid an egg. The skin healed over it and the grub crawled out. The cat was fine, but had a hole like the one you are describing. The vet just cleaned the hole and it healed up fine. Gross but fine!

Edited with pics, somebody at another message board said it looked like an abcess that burst. He's at the vet now, so I'll post an update when he gets home.
