Stupid System

So on Friday I was absolutely heated thanks to the phone call I got from Alexander's school. Since school started the day after Labor Day, Alexander has missed a whopping THREE days of school which averages to one absence per month. This is due to Alexander's stupid bus company not showing up on time during either really cold days or stormy days. I'm sorry. I love my son, but I refuse to wait for half an hour or MORE in thunder, lightening, gusty winds and rain for a bus to be late anyway and THEY NEVER CALL when they are late like they are supposed to. Alexander's school is fairly far from home. It's two buses away and the trip takes about 45 minutes IF we catch both buses back to back, an hour or MORE if the buses are late. It's a 2.5 mile walk to his school. He is a 7 year old pudgy boy. By the time we'd get to his school walking, he'd be about 2 hours late anyway. The bus would cost me $4 round trip and most weeks I only have enough transportation to get me to work. When I explain this to the asshole bitch that called me, she tells me that is not a valid excuse and that they'd have to report me if his absences continued. Ummmm.... FUCK YOU. Both my kids are up to date or AHEAD of their school work. They eat healthy balanced meals. They always have clean clothes and are rarely absent. How about they report the parent of kids who come to school wearing too small DIRTY clothing? How about they report the kids who are aggressive and who's parents NEVER come to any meetings they are supposed to attend even though THEY HAVE NO JOBS!!??!! How about they report the parents who's kid comes to school with black eyes or bruises constantly?? Why bother me, a parent who attends all of Alexander's school meetings, who goes on as many of his trips as possible, who always comes to the little holiday gathering his classes have had, who's kid is exceedingly intelligent despite his inattentiveness, who's mother is well aware of Alexander's weaknesses and stregnths, who's always clean and obviously well cared for?? I don't get it, but tomorrow I go across the street to the school my daughter attends to see if there is space available in second grade from my dear Alexander. If there is space, I am going to register Alexander and transfer him there and I will withdraw him from the other school. This year will be a trial run. I will be withdrawing him from his special ed services just so I don't have to deal with that unreasonable school any longer. If Alexander can indeed handle general ed classes then I will no longer enroll him in those services. Wish Alexander and I luck.
So I went to my daughter's school today. There is definitely room for him especially since it is his zone school. The problem is I have to get him discharged from special ed at his other school and then withdraw him and transfer him. *sigh* It'll take a month to do so supposedly. We'll see.
Comments:
3 days doesn't seem like too much. I'd call your school district and find out what the rules about absences actually are. This sounds like crap to me.
Good luck to you and your son. I would also see about finding your son a child advocate (I don't know where you live and I know each area is different so sorry if that's something that's not available to you). They might be able to help you out though if you can get one.
