Last Friday, I decided to clean out my closet.
Now, my closet isn't just one of those itty bitty bedroom closets that you open and see the whole thing... no, my closet is that old-fashioned under-the-stairs type that you can use as a tiny, sloped guest room. So you can imagine just how many boxes and bags could fit into one of those... add to the equation the fact that I'm a sentimental freak and a boarderline hoarder and we're talking LOADS of stuff in that closet.
Oh, yeah... also add to the equation the fact that when I clean rooms, sometimes I grab a box and just toss crap in and then shove the box into my closet....
Ugh, right? Right, lol.
So I decided on that fine Friday, right around noonish, that I was going to take care of the closet once and for all.
My entire living room was covered in boxes and piles and bags... it took 10 hours to go through the closet, sort everything, re-pack everything, haul out to the trash what I'd decided to let go (sniff...sniff!), and in the end, I had a clean closet!
Well, for some reason, that wasn't enough (and the whole cleaning of the closet thing somehow left all sorts of junk all around my bedroom, so...) so I did the foyer (boxes stacked in there for years, lol), the living room, the dining room (actually re-built a bookshelf in there for kids' books and my plants!), the kitchen, the bathroom, the pantry, and finally, my bedroom. The bedroom took the longest; I had boxes and boxes of stuff stacked against walls.
Now, looking at my house, I can't believe how much clutter I'd picked up in the last four years, and that doesn't count the stuff we brought over when we moved here, lol. And I lived it in, cleaned around it, and practically ignored it until something crawled up my bum and motivated me last Friday. It feels so GOOD. I drove my kids and my husband crazy for days now, but now it's done, and they are about as thrilled as I am, lol.
I can not only see my bedroom floor (all of it, I mean, lol), but I can see the lower part of the walls, too, LOL! And you wouldn't believe all the cool stuff I have that I forgot I had, LOL. Sometimes two and three of the same item, lol. When you're too cluttered and forget what you have, you end up just picking up another one of whatever it is you need at the store... I don't have to do that anymore because everything I own is in labeled boxes, all together with like items... a crafts box, a stationery box, Christmas boxes, photos and albums boxes... anything and everything is sorted and labeled, now!
And the dust... holy bananas... you never know how much dust you have until you start moving things around, lol. And I found that clutter holds enough dust to choke a (fill in the name of your favorite animal here, lol)... I don't have to worry about so much dust anymore because it will actually hit the floor instead of "stuff", now, lol. Much easier to vacuum, lol.
I finally have a foyer I'm proud of, where I can let people in without saying "please excuse the mess," and blushing (and hoping they have kids and are as unorganized as me, LOL)...
So I'm sitting here in my nice, clutter-free bedroom, looking out at my clutter free dining room and living room, and for the first time in a long time I actually feel completely relaxed. It's so much easier to relax when you're not actively ignoring boxes and bags stacked against walls and in corners, lol.
Everything, and I mean everything, has a place now and I have literally NEVER had that before. I'm 33 and I've NEVER had that before, lol.
So I'm taking a vow... well, a couple of them. Here they are:
1. I will do mini de-clutters every Saturday night.
2. I will not over-collect. I will only keep the things that *really* matter to me, not just stuff everything in a box.
3. I will not just stuff everything into a box, lol. Yes, I'm repeating myself here, but I vow to fight my laziness and my "I'll go through this stuff later" mentality and put things where they need to go RIGHT AWAY... not later, not tomorrow, not in an hour... immediately.
4. I will enjoy my home. And I can do that better, now :)
So this has been a truly amazing thing. And another side effect of this is that my husband is looking at me like I'm Superwoman, LOL! Eight years we've been married and he's never seen me complete such a huge project without putting it off or giving up, lol. For once, I didn't get overwhelmed and quit.
I'm pretty damn proud of myself :). And I'm totally motivated to keep the house clutter-free! Maybe I'll even invite some people over to celebrate, lol.
P.S. As for the toss-out count.... I believe we threw over 20 huge Hefty sack bags of junk away... that's a lot of stuff, lol.
