A former Reagan Defense Department official and founder of a conservative military think tank is spearheading an effort to warn Americans about the consequences of what is known as Sharia-compliant finance.

Frank Gaffney, president of the Center for Security Policy, served as assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs under President Ronald Reagan. He also founded the Coalition to Stop Sharia, a group that is concerned about a recent Treasury Department seminar called "Islamic Finance 101."

"They hoped to encourage other officials and agencies to embrace the idea that it would be good for America to have Sharia-compliant finance insinuated into our capital markets and adopted by various financial institutions," he explains.

However, according to Gaffney, Sharia-compliant financing is anything but good for America. "Unless you like the idea of having our Constitution supplanted, violently by the way, by this global government that runs everything according to Islamic Sharia law -- which involves such barbaric practices as stonings and beheadings and floggings -- you're not going to want to go there," he contends.

Gaffney says his Coalition is calling on the Treasury Department to cease its efforts to promote Sharia-compliant finance and to treat Sharia accordingly by, among other things, banning its application to U.S. financial institutions and products.
