Well, the fur's been flyin' here on Cafemom as of late.

I'm a Freethinker.  I used to be a christian.  I'm a Libertarian.  I used to be a Republican.  Hell, if I can change my thinking, anybody can!!!!!!  What have I become?  A more fulfilled, happier, more accepting, more liberated human being.  Why?  Because my thought isn't bogged down with a bunch of nonsensical dogma and doctrine...written and interpreted by someone with an agenda.

The election this past November 4th was an earth-shaking event.  We elected the first multi-racial American to the highest office in the land.....however, coupled with all that joy and elation was a frightening reminder that we, as a country, have much more to do.  Proposition 8 in CA passed, showing the entire country and the world that America is still back in the stone age when it comes to human rights.  Oh, yes, the "majority" would love to keep this debate in the "we want our RELIGIOUS freedom" column....well, that ain't happenin'.

I posted a thread merely alerting a group that I'm involved in that a rally would be held on Saturday, November 15th to show your support of the LGBT community.  To show that you didn't agree with the CA vote on Prop 8.  What happened?  The religious overtook the post and railed and railed against homosexuality and decided that this entire 'fight' is about securing THEIR religious rights.  Apparently their right to segregate.  Their rights to treat other Americans as second class citizens because of who they choose to love.  Their rights to throw millions of dollars toward a POLITICAL issue and still KEEP their tax exempt status.  Bottom line?  Homosexuality doesn't fit their religious view of the world, so it's gotta be segregated and kept in the closet....and for god's sake away from their impressionable children!!!!!!!  (it might rub off or something!!!)

Why can I write with such vitriol?  Because I USED TO THINK THE SAME EXACT WAY!!!!!!!!  I, too, used to believe all the tripe that I wrote in the above paragraph.  What changed?  I realized that I was missing alot of understanding and missing out on alot of the real world.  I realized that with strict religious views of the world, that were painfully outdated...which I would later come to learn were blatantly false as well.....I was not seeing the world as it is.  I was not allowing myself to really experience the world and my place in it.  When I began to see the void, I began to fill it with TRUTH and with understanding....the great thinkers of the world, the great philosophers, truth became my mainstay...and damn it feels goooooood.

So as the debate continues for the rights, the basic human rights, of people in our nation....I'll continue to be in the thick of it.  One of the "arguments" found in the debate was, "marriage is a privilege, not a right!"  Who gives a shit?  I don't give a rat's ass whether it's a right or a privilege...the entire point is it isn't YOUR PLACE to make that determination in another human being's life!!!!!  Why not just back off and give them the chance at happiness?  Why not get off the religious high horse for one second and allow another human being the opportunity to live their lives without fear....give them the chance to see what it's like to spend each day with the one you love...to have someone to come home to....to raise a family with....what is wrong with that?

I'm editing this after reading a wonderful article in Freethought Today from the "Freedom From Religion Foundation".  It's a speech given by Jim McCollum...some exerpts:

"Imposed upon the common law in 1215 was the Magna Carta, the precursor of the constitutional law.  This was political, not religious.  Since the days of the Magna Carta, the purpose of a government based upon a constitution that is difficult to change and that supercedes all other laws, is to prevent rash, not-well-thought-out, heat-of-the-moment actions of that government, especially those dealing with individual rights, as well as preventing a tyranny by the majority.  I believe the language of our constitution has served us well, in these regards in the over 220 years since it was adopted."  (emphasis mine)

Clause 2 of the Sixth Article of the Constitution reads:  "This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwhithstanding.  (Notice that this makes terms in treaties the law of the land)

Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli ratified by Congress in June of 1797:  "...the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion..."
