I'm considering donating one of my healthy kidneys to a man whom I have never met before. I read a blog a month or so ago about a guy in California who desperatly needs a kidney transplant or he wont live to see his children grow up. I dont know much about him and I contacted a UCLA Transplant Cordinator. I placed a phone call late Wednesday night and heard back from her this morning via voice mail. I called her back but she was unavailable but I did leave a message. I know there is a lot of testing that goes into donating an organ. Even more so since its a living donor. If it were me I'd want someone who was willing to step up and be a donor.

My main concern is I do want to have more children someday would this hinder my chances if I'm a match? I was watching a repeat on Extreme Make Over Home Edition and the family recieving was nominated because this mom donated her bone marrow to save the life of a child and this child is now 3 years old and perfectly healthy. The mother of this child nominated the woman who saved her daughter. I guess my question is is if this was your husband, your son, your nephew, your brother wouldnt you want someone to save his life? Would you or have you done this to help out a perfect stranger?

I haven't done it, and I don't know anyone that has. This is a very big decision. I do agree with you, that I would hope someone would donate to myself or my family if there were ever the need.

I think this is one of those questions where you just have to think about it and completely commit to the idea before going through with it. I don't know if there are any risks to fertility after an operation like this. I would imagine that pregnancy is not affected much, if at all. This is a very selfless and brave charity you will be doing if you decide to go through with it.

Good luck. Let me know if you need someone to chat with.
