JP's psycho-luminescence

glowing thoughts fresh from my brain

A lot of moms are outraged and scared about the recent disclosure of poisons tainting commercial infant formula.  I've seen many moms get very nervous about your formula fed babies.  I've come to learn that there is always an alternative.  Always.  And baby formula is no exception.  So, just for my cafemom lovelies, I googled "home made baby formula" and found some recipes.  The one I'm posting seems pretty easy and complete.  Making this at home will give you the advantage of knowing exactly what is going in your precious baby's body and could probably save you money.  So here's a recipe.  If you don't like it, do the google search and look for more.  And definitely don't be afraid to bring a copy of the recipe to your ped to see if it's missing anything.  Good luck, mommies!

Homemade Baby Formula

by: Annette M. Hall

About My Baby Formula Recipe

Each morning I made my grandson's baby formula in a clean blender and poured it into his 4 oz. & 8 oz. Playtex Nurser bottles. The recipe made enough bottles to last him for that day, with perhaps one left over for the next morning. I do not recommend making formula for more than one-day at a time. Store the bottle in the refrigerator.

It is important to note here that everything must be clean and sterile; clean hands, clean blender, countertop, utensils. If you create a spill be sure to clean it up right away and clean off any spills on containers. I found the Playtex Nurser to be most convenient to use.

Though most parents should know this, I'm still amazed at how many young parents don't have a problem microwaving bottles. Never warm a bottle in the microwave, it not only heats unevenly, the microwave will also destroy important nutrients. It's just not worth the risk.

Finally, I must add that when I started making his formula, I was terrified. I didn't want to do anything that would harm my precious grandson, but I was desperate. Nothing the doctors had done for him was helping and he wasn't getting any better.

There is no one "right" way or thing to feed your new baby. A search on the Internet will show that doctor's, dietitians and nutritionists are all over the map on what is best for you, not to mention your child. Do not let fear keep you from doing what you know to be right for your child. It will require that you do the research, consult your doctor or learn all you can to be certain that your child's nutrional needs are being met.

Proper nutrition is essential for proper brain development and essential nerve connections. I would like to note that I was shocked to find that the FDA has greatly changed it's minimum nutritional standards published today as compared with those that were published back in the 1960's (and not for the better). Don't take my word for it, check your local used book store, you should be able to find something from that time period on the shelves.

You may find other products that will meet or surpass those that I used for my grandson available at your local healthfood, my grandson is eleven now and I'm certain improvements have been made since then.

Infant Formula Recipe

In addition to high levels of aluminum in soy estrogens in soy (a soy-fed baby receives the equivalent of five birth control pills' worth of estrogen every day), recent research suggests that high concentrations of manganese in soy can lead to brain damage in infants.

I adjusted the Flax seed oil in the formula daily to be sure he didn't get constipated or diarrhea. Be sure to keep an eye on baby's stool.

Thank you for posting this. Formula just seems like such a scary thing to make yourself but this looks easy. If I'm ever in need, I would definitely give making my own a try. I'm not skeered, lol!

That is so great of you to post. If I ever have another child and cannot breast feed I will definitely look back into this.

Rana, it doesn't say.  But the link the recipe provided takes us to evaporated goats' milk.  I have heard both good and bad things about raw vs pasteurized, I haven't done any research to make the decision myself, though, because it doesn't really pertain to me.  I guess the best thing would be to get your own mama goat!
