I have made so many new friends lately, and unfortuantely I am not familiar with all of their practices, beliefs and things. So I wanted to have a post where I could learn about what they celebrate at this time of year....I know that there is a diverse group of ladies here on the cafe...
In my house, the children are bouncing off of the walls because Christmas is almost here!!! they have been since Thanksgiving day...when we put up our decorations....
Anyone who would like to respond may! All are welcome!!! I will not allow one person to be ugly to another for what they practice/believe in. I think it would be great if we could all learn a little about each other as to why this season is special to each of us.
So, what do you say ladies??? Let's here why this time of year is special to you!!!
**I hate to do this, but, any nastiness will automatically be deleted. There will be NO bashing of another religion at all. There will be no calling names of anyone else, or saying their belief is false. PLEASE, I IMPLORE you all to be the wonderful ladies I know you are.**

I love Christmas eve most of all. I think it's the anticipation of what's to come...... I usually bake all day and make fudge and peanut brittle and other cookies my family requests. We prefer to stay home but occassionally go to a family members for dinner and cheer. We traditionally eat tamales and watch It's A Wonderful Life, sometimes we play games or take a walk to look at the lights in the neighborhood. Around 7 or 8 pm we go on a website to track Santa (norad.org) and when Santa gets to NY, even I get excited !!! By the time he gets to Colorado the kids go to bed and hubby and I stay up and fill the stockings, put out cookies and milk and try to get to sleep ourselves....
By 7amwe have 3 kids standing over our bed. So I get up turn on coffee pot, put the monkey bread in the oven, I light the fire and candles and the frankincense and muir and then we open stockings, taking our time of course. The kids each get 1 big gift. Lastly we share a morning breakfast together and then get ready for company to come or we go to some one's house... We don't exchange gifts with the family anymore (we used to pull names) but to us now it's a day to spend together and have a meal of lasagna and ham and some amazing desserts. We enjoy the company, we laugh and if we're home we play Wii sports and take a stroll in the winter air. Which sometimes in California is not wintry at all.
I can't wait for Christmas !
Awww, come on ladies!!! I KNOW that we have a very diverse community here......I really would love to learn of your traditions and celebrations....PLEASE?
I am Christian and we follow those beliefs. Except that we are ushers at our church so we spend a lot of time at church the week before Christmas (this year we have 13 scheduled Christmas Eve services plus 5 regular Sunday services) We actually attend the 11 p.m. service on Christmas Eve ourselves. (Although by that time we usually have the entire service memorized..lol)
On Christmas morning the kids are allowed to open their stockings ONLY and mom and dad get until 10:00 a.m. to sleep. Then it's gift time. After that we read the Gospel account of Christ's birth.
As for dinner, I'll do a roast of some sort. There are only 4 of us (3 if my son can't come home) so it's a quiet day.
v_clar ~ Whoa nelly!!! That's alot of services!!! I bet you do have them memorized, LOL.
You morning sounds so nice and relaxed!! Thank you so much for sharing.......
Great idea Beckie! It's fun to learn about other people's celebrations.
We have a pretty traditional Christmas celebration, we hung the tree and stockings the day after Thanksgiving. It looks pretty silly with all the ornaments halfway up the tree so the baby doesn't get into them. lol So we only put a few. It looks nice just the same. On the 19th, DH & I are going to the city to spend the night in a hotel and get up the next morning to do our Christmas shopping. On Christmas Eve, we'll be making some treats like chocolate covered pretzels, Muddy Buddies (Chex cereal with melted peanut butter and chocolate chips and covered in powdered sugar), possibly Divinity if I feel up to it, we'll probably do some type of cookies and hopefully my MIL will do peanut brittle. And just whatever sounds good. I want to send a plate to school for my oldest daughter's bus driver and her teacher. On Christmas Eve, we make a birthday cake for Jesus and then we will sing Happy Birthday to Him and read the account of His birth in the Bible. The kids get to open one present (which is always pajamas haha) and then off to bed. This is when I usually wrap all the presents and put them under the tree. Christmas morning we'll get up and let them tear into the presents. As far as food goes, it's usually whatever we feel like cooking. We'll probably just do a ham and some fixings this year and keep things low key. The only difference really is that Santa doesn't visit our house. It's just a choice we made and we've asked the kids not to let on to their friends. So far, so good! DH & I both grew up believing in Santa but it was just a decision we made before we had children. We have friends and family that do believe in him so we don't want to be the ones to ruin the surprise. :)
Dez ~ That sounds awesome and so close to our celebrations....'cept for the ham lol. We do the same about santa. My kids know that we do not do it, they know the real history of him, and they are also aware that not everyone does the way we do, and it is not up to us to tell anyone any different. Thank you for sharing with us!!!
I am excittedly waiting for some ladies of different faiths and celebrations to respond.....
Well, I am atheist, my husband is agnostic...the rest of my family on both sides is Christian. We celebrate Christmas in the traditional tree/deocrations/presents way...we just don't emphasize the religious aspects. My kids know the story of Jesus but they know it as a 'story' just as they know the Winter Solstice story and the other religious stories of this year. We do Santa but our oldest is 14 and he knows better and our 8yr old is kind of getting the idea that he's not real. We let them come to their own conclusions. Christmas Eve is spent at my Mom's with my family where we open presents and eat and have fun...Christmas Day is spent at home and then usually the weekend before or after Christmas is spent with husband's family. We always attend our local Christmas parade and my sons are musical...the oldest is in his school band and the youngest sings in our state boy choir so we also attend those concerts. We also watch all the wonderful old specials on tv.

We have the tradition Christian beliefs. As far as our Christmas "routine" goes, it varies slightly from year to year.
House gets decorated some time in December. Outside lights go up when good weather warrants it. I usually buy more and more lights each year (add to the ones I have).
We go to church on Christmas Eve, usually at 11pm. Christmas Day, we open gifts, and I am busy cooking dinner. We have family come over for dinner, and we usually play games after more gift opening. Lately, we've been playing "Apples to Apples" (highly recommended for those of you that don't have it!!)
Oh...I am not a big fan of ham, so I usually cook up a turkey for Christmas dinner.
