Doug is off today so this morning he got up, with the intention of letting me sleep in a bit, and went down to make the kids' cereal. They were playing in Seth's room and I was actually awake just lying there listening to them play and laugh.
Well, Norah had been sick yesterday and stayed in my bed most of the day, watching TV and resting. We have one of those fold up bamboo trays that you can use for if you eat in bed...I had it out because I used it for Norah yesterday. At some point they must have taken it into Seth's room. I didn't notice and honestly wouldn't have thought it was a big deal. Seems harmless enough.
Next thing I know Seth is crying and then screaming and Norah is screaming "Mommy, Daddy...Help him! Help Him!" Doug and I both come running. Both kids are screaming their heads off.
Somehow, Seth had fallen on top of that tray (it was on his floor) and got his right thumb caught under it and the leg folded up under it under his full body weight (32 Lbs) and smashed his thumb between the leg and the tray. I was sure it was broken.
We got him up and his thumb was smashed flat at the part where the thumb meets the hand. It was white and turning bruised looking. He was screaming like I have never heard him scream. He would have no part of putting ice on it, so Doug gave him tylemol for pain while I went up and got dressed and called the doctor....to see if they wanted us to just go to the ER or if they could call in an xray prescription.
The nurse said we could take him to ER, but it would probably be easier and quicker just to take him to an urgent care...an xray is an xray...there was really no need to go to the children's hospistal for something like this.
(We also had to calm down Norah who was freaking out thinking his thumb was broken OFF!)
So, a quick change for Seth and we are off to the Urgent Care (Doug stayed behind with Norah to get her ready for school). He finally stopped screaming about half way there. They took us right back...the EMT in triage was great with him and they got us right into a room.
The doc came in, looking like Patch Adams in a Hawaiian Shirt, Kahki pants, Tennis shoes...no lab coat...LOL. He was great with him too, but thought it was surely broken at the joint that meets the thumb to the hand. They got us right back to xray.
Since I assured them I had my tubes tied and so could notbe pregnant, they let me sit with him on the xray table and hold him on my lap to calm him and help hold his hand straight. He did great and they gave him some stickers.
Poor little guy...after everything we had to do, he'd say, "All done. We go bye-bye now Mommy?"
Back to the room....in less than five minutes, Patch Adams comes back and tells us, thankfully, no bones are broken, but that he has a very bad soft tissue/muscle injury. He said to continue to give him tylenol or motrin for pain and maybe get one of thsoe squishie kid's ice packs, so maybe he would play with it in his hand to ice it a bit, but otherwise, let him use it as he can. He said unfortuantely it may take a couple months before it is fully healed and he is pain free, but eventually it will be fine.
They'll send the xrays over to his doctor, who will call us if he has a different opinion or wants more xays.
Feffy is okay now...just holding his thumb out and not using it. Saying it hurts from time to time, but otherwise acting normally. I am off to the store for more motrin and to try to find one of those squishie ice backs. I know I have seen a Lightening McQueen one at Meijer.
Just goes to show you never know what kind of freak way your kids (boys, especially, IMO) can get hurt! Thank God it is not broken though!

AND I NEVER HAVE A DULL MOMENT?????
Poor kiddo's; BOTH of them. How scary...
kisses to them both and hugs to YOU, Sister.
Oh Feffy!!!! I could hardly read this i was cringing so much......
WHen Free was 2 he went running thru the old apt I had and knocked the board holding the huge, heavy ancient window down on his hand. It JAMMED SHUT! I had to use a screw driver to pry it up and get his hand out. No broken bones....I was astonished, but I guess it was enough cartilege still to save it.
Oh, poor little guy. So glad you managed to get him and Norah calmed down. Also thankful that it isn't broken. Luckily kids tend to mend closer than some of us in the older variety :). Big hugs to Feffy, but thumbs down on his injury.
Stay inspired!
omg .. poor little guy, so glad it is not broken.. poor thing.. hugs to him and you all!
Poor little guy!
Glad he's all in one piece w/ no broken bones!
Prayers for no more pain.
He is doing much better today. The swelling has gone down mostly and it doesnt seem to be bothering him too much.

UGH!!! How scary. Sounds like you guys handled it well though. I think if it would've been my kid, I would've sat right there and cried with him. Glad it's not broken and he's going to be okay.
