For the past two years, we have had one of Santa's elves come and stay with us for a couple of weeks before Christmas. The first year, she arrived two weeks before the 25th, last year only one week. My older daughter (Genevieve, 8 yoa) is fretting because some of her school friends already have their elves and is wondering why ours hasn't arrived yet.
Who is this elf, and why hasn't she come yet? Each year Santa lets some of his more mischievous elves be "adopted" for a period before Christmas, and picks them up to take them back to the North Pole when he drops off presents. Our elf is Pixie. She sleeps during the day, and before my girls go to bed at night, Genevieve sprinkles magic dust on her and leaves out a small snack. After everyone has gone to bed, Pixie wakes up and performs very mischievous acts. She has, on different nights, painted my husband's toenails bright red, removed all of the canned food from the cupboard and made a pyramid in the middle of the kitchen, written lipstick notes on the bathroom mirror, and TP'd the ceiling fans.
The problem is that the main mischief maker is me, and it's hard to come up with a different idea every night, especially when we are looking at more than a week of mischief. I don't want to make too big a mess, or do anything that is too time-consuming (after all, I have to do this right before I go to bed).
I was thinking that this year, Pixie could do some helpful things as well as some "naughty" things. I've thought that one night, for example, she could set up our tree (it's a lovely artificial one) and the next, she could string the lights. But I'm running out of ideas.
I'd love to hear from you to see what great ideas other moms could come up with!
