Here we are, a week until we leave on what was going to be the last  big party for me, seeing as how we were planning to "start trying" in January, and the lateness of my period prompted me to buy the kit. Well, actually DH did as I stood in the tanning booth, wondering if there was any chance that it was just the stress of flying for the first time in over a decade that had delayed the appearance of my little friend. I have been late before in my life, especially during times of stress.

When I ran out of the lingerie store, he was sitting in the Jetta, looking handsome as ever, ready to take me to lunch before we go to see our kids perform in the Nutcracker. He was wearing a grey suit and tie with a white shirt that shows off his deepening tan, because the kids expect us to be dressed up. Even though we went to the Matinee I was wearing a sparkly, deep red, ankle length gown with a slit in the back, which DH bought for me at my favorite store, Sharon's Closet.

Duncan's is usually where we go when we eat out in Amherst, since they have Guinness on tap, and it was the fact that I would not be able to order my usual pint if I was possibly pregnant that had prompted DH to get the kit when it was my turn to tan. So there I was, in the bathroom of the pub, which luckily was a single and not a bunch of stalls, in an evening gown, peeing on a stick.

The directions were very specific, and precise. One had to pee on it for 5 seconds, not more, not less, and then immediately replace the cap and lay on a flat surface for 2 minutes. Failure to follow any of these directions, the insert warned, was to risk a false reading.

I managed to get the pee on the stick (and the seat, though luckily missed my footwear) and replace the cap, stop peeing long enough to reach over and put it on the little shelf above the sink, and finish peeing before DH knocked on the door, but he had to wait another 27 seconds (I was counting 1 Mississippi 2 Mississippi) because I was mistakenly, yet optimistically, wearing my period undies, and they required some adjusting so as to not show saggy wrinkles though my dress.

He came in and helped me with another problem with the back of the dress, having been in a hurry in the tanning room, and while he made the elastic lay flat, I kept counting. He started chatting about our food order having been place and the Guinness ordered and whoops...we were going to wait until...I look at the test and told him I guess I can stop counting now, because it was a very clear and dark positive.

It took a moment to register, and then he kissed me and ever since, I will catch him looking at me with a special smile on his face. We left the bathroom and went to our table just as the waiter brought our pints. I did have a few sips while I ate my steak, but he had most of my pint, resulting in me being the one who drove us to the Nutcracker.

The show was wonderful, and all through it I kept one hand over my midriff and the other on his knee, his strong, warm hand covering mine. Afterwards, he asked me again if I was upset that I would not be able to drink in Jamaica, and honestly, despite the fact that I had been planning to justify the higher ticket price of the "all-inclusive package" by consuming vast quantities of booze, I am not upset...not one bit. And will not run the risk of becoming dehydrated under the tropical sun. I am going to send an email to our travel agent and see if non-alcoholic wine and beer is available.

It does mean I will be 6 months along when we go to Europe, which I am not very keen on flying so far along...my due date (according to our calculations) is Aug 22. We are hoping for a boy, to even the balance a little, seeing as we gals outnumber them 2:1.

Now I have to find a midwife.
