Anyone else see a GIANT disc in the sky that looked like the moon but was far too big to be the moon Friday night? It was the moon!!! A SuperMoon to be exact!
"A SuperMoon is a perigee-syzygy, a new or full moon (syzygy)
which occurs when the Moon is at 90% or greater of its mean
closest approach to Earth (perigee). "
...which means it was full Friday night (the Earth's shadow didn't block any of its reflected light) AND it was very close to the Earth (the moon's orbit is more of an oval than a circle, so it swings away and then comes back closer as it moves around the Earth). And therefore was bigger, to the human eye, than at any other time.
I turned a corner on the way to work Friday morning (when it wasn't quite full technically) and blurted out loud "WOW!" when I saw it. I was also lucky enough to see it close to the horizon, which makes it seem bigger than when it is mid-sky. IT. WAS. AMAZING!!!!
Anyway, the quote above is from http://www.astropro.com/features/tables/cen21ce/suprmoon.html, which was the first thing to come up when I googled "supermoon." It also has a table so you can see when the next SuperMoon is.
:o)

HA! I'm NOT the only one who saw it then! lol We were driving to DH's party and I saw it rising through the bare trees, right between two mountains and I was like, "OH! OOH! MOON!" DH swerved, thinking there was something wrong. lmao Then the kids saw it and they were yelling, "Look! MOON!" Mark muttered the whole way about me scaring him.. Told him that's what he gets for marrying (and having kids) with a Pagan woman. ;)
It was beautiful! We were shocked when we picked up Ramon from work, and somehow the cold air makes everything in the sky seem brighter and clearer. The night before that, the moon had a "halo", yellow and blue, it was so pretty.
