As Christmas is just next week, the crowds are getting frenzied. Parking lots have lines .... forget about the stores! Commercials are hitting harder with tantalizing items so that you'll beg your near and dear ones to spill hard earned money for that "must have" you won't even remember by April. Kids are writing letters to Santa with their "wish lists" and behaving just in case someone is watching. Parents are stressing because we are officially in a recession and they still want to give their kids a Chrismas.

I'm sorry, stop. WHAT?!?!?!?

If you don't have $$ you can't have Christmas? That means my mom lied to me for years ... we never had money, but we had awesome Christmas seasons! Was I gypped? Does that mean my kids are being fooled? We're broke, but Christmas is still happening in our home!!!

Really, what's the point?

It's smiles, love, laughter, family, friendship, joy, giving, and most importantly JESUS! Mary and Joseph were as poor as they come ... and I KNOW they had CHRISTMAS! So did shepherds who had nothing to bring but smelly sheep, and the oriental kings who travelled for years. And this year, WE are CHOOSING to have an awesome CHRISTMAS. We are going to remember the manger, and the cross, and all of the other truly awesome gifts we've been given and enjoy each of those. We are going to give to other people who need it more than we do, even if it means we get less. We are going to love being together and sing and hug and laugh ... because we understand the whole point: JESUS and HIS gifts to us. And now we give gifts to Him to show our love and respect ... and all He ever asked for was your heart! That costs everything to give, but money isn't involved.

Awsome post! I look forward to Christmas all year, not for what we're giving each other, but to the family getting together from all over and enjoying time together and to celebrate the birth of Christ.

This should be a popular post for sure (with the exception of the word "gipped" ,which is actually spelled and gypped and, although most people dont know it...I assume including the OP here, is a racist term. Not getting on you for it...I dont think you knew...many people dont...just informing...feel free to delete my comment). But this post is so true and should be the #1 post today. Voting popular.

yes you say it but it is hard when it seems like EVERYBODY is doing and buying all kinds of stuff for their kids... I know in my heart that, that is NOT what it is about, but it sure seems the MAJORITY rules on this one.... I am a simple person and for the most part my kids are too, I will be happy to give them gifts with what little money we do have and enjoy a day of eating and just being all together. But hearing about what other people dao just makes me feel like i am not doing enough!

Well said...I totally agree with your post. This year we may not have money and lots of gifts but we have each other and we have the real reason for Christmas..Jesus. God bless you.

There are fewer gifts under the tree this year, but you're right...we can always celebrate what this season is really about.

Dec. 18, 2008 at 7:02 AM So true. Where did the shopping frenzy come from? Why do we feel OBLIGATED to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on gifts? Christmas isn't about getting, it's about giving our heart's (just as you said).
