What kind of parental notifications do you expect from your child(s) school?
If a subject related to health, values, morals, tolerance or diversity was being taught would you expect to be notified and be able to view what your child would be viewing, reading or exposed to? Would you be concerned about who would be teaching this material to your child?
Kinds of examples I am talking about are:
Your school decided to teach diversity which included material covering same sex marriage and homosexuality. This material was deemed appropriate, by the administration, for kinder through 5thgrade without parental notification. Would it bother you that you weren't notified or able to opt your child out of participating?
If your school nurse handed out birthcontrol to girls 11-17 without parental notification would it bother you? If your fifth grader was taught how to use condoms, spermicide, ect as part of his/her "health and body image" video would you be surprised? Would you be upset your weren't informed this material would also be covered?
If anything other than the standard curriculum of reading, writing and arithmetic was being taught by your school would you feel you had the right to know? Would you want to know and have the ability to opt your child out of such things?
What if the school decided they had the authority to deem what was appropriate for your child to learn and at what age.
