I did that...I can say that I did that. I was in the 3rd grade; I was 8 years old. Coach Clara had scheduled SOFTBALL for P.E. on this particular day, and I wanted to RUN away.
Softball? Um...I have a headache. Can I go to the nurses office?
NO.
ok, then...fine, softball it is.
I waited, and watched; I hope I could do it.
I watched and waited, and moved up the line...
I watched, studied, and moved closer to my turn; and I listened, to the kids scream.
"C'mon! Hit the ball! You can do it!" They all shouted...
...our team mate panicked, then ran to 2nd.
"Well done" they all cheered...
But the faces of all the 8 year olds FELL when they saw that I WAS UP NEXT.
I was certain that they were sure that I was going to fail us all...
But, I was determined not to.
I wont let you down, I thought to them....my class mates.
I took the bat.
I'd never held a bat before....
It was heavy, solid, and determined in it's own right; All I needed to do, was BE THE EYES.
Right?
"Here we go", I hear Coach Clara Candelara mumble, as she backed away....
She never liked me. Why? Because I thought jumping jacks were dumb.
That's why.
I mean, WHO SWEATS ON PURPOSE????
OH, and because in the 2nd grade, I got into a fist fight with Elizabeth Bates because she turned her fur coat inside out, and charged my friends to "reach in and feel the kittens".
I thought she should certainly be pummeled for that...Coach Clara was the one who pulled me off of her.
But, back to the bat, the kids, the field, the nerves...
I swung the first time, and I missed.
I heard moans; I knew I'd momentarily let them down, but I WAS DETERMINED.
I held the bat as steady as I could for being the scrawniest kid in class...
And when the ball hurled toward me, I swung.
I swung that bat with all the might and Fervor that I had.
Right over the fence, the ball went....it was gone.
I ran...
I RAN like a MAD WOMAN.
All 50 lbs of my 8 year old self flew across the field like a fawn in a prairie; I RAN.
PAST first base....to the gate.
WHY?
To see if it really had gone over....
...that's why.
THEN, I ran to second, to third, then HOME.
It was the ONLY home run I ever hit.
Ever.
It's been 27 years...and I can remember it like it was yesterday.
Thank GOD.

Not the only homerun you've ever hit my sister (maybe in baseball or softball), but you've hit many more homeruns where they really count. Loveyou.
you brought tears to my eyes... I love memories, and I love that you shared them with us......
Great Story.
I once got myself out in a game of kickball in PE, but that's a story for another time! LOL
awww! How awesome! ... and awesome that you ran over to the fence before 2nd base. :) I used to pick flowers when they put me in the outfield so I always had to play infield. :)
What a great memory! I hate PE as a child. I would still hate it today. I am happy for your success.

Cute story I had my pants fly off in P.E. in fourth grade we were riding on scooter boards and I had those wrap around short ( you know the ones that tie) and the tie got wrapped around a wheel and my board flew out from under me and my shorts went with it. That was a horrible day
