Irrational Fear of using the proper HOMONYM.
- getting some grammar/spelling off my chest. here is a list of homonym mistakes I commonly see on Cafemom
AD/ADD- the first is short for advertisement (like a commercial) the second is a math process.
Advice/Advise- this isn't a homonym but I see the wrongs being used often. advice is like "I need advice on what to wear to the party"- rhymes with ICE. Advise is like "I would advise you to not eat that." rhymes with EYES or IZE
Affect/Effect- I admit, this is a harder one sometimes. AFFECT is an action - to change something. "The ice affected the temperature of the water" and EFFECT means the result of- "The side effect of the medicine was vomiting."
BOAR/BORE- the first is a PIG, the second is "not interesting to point of picking your nose for entertainment"
Break/Brake - the first is what happens to the good vase when you drop it, the second is what you do to stop your car. (and can be a noun or a verb)
But/Butt- the first in a conjunction (and, or, but, yet) the second is your posterior or the end of a cigarette
Carrot/carat/karat- the first is what we eat, or feed a rabbit. The second is a unit of measurement for precious stones, and the third is used in 24 part pure gold (24 karat gold)
CITE/SIGHT/SITE- the first means to refer to (like citing the source you used), the second means vision, and the 3rd is a LOCATION or Place. like a Dig site for excavation or a website. (please do not say you found a neat websight (or just sight) online)
CLOSE/CLOTHES - close is to shut. like 'close the door', the other is fabric worn to cover your body- a shirt, dress, pants...
There is a difference between DAM and DAMN . Die/Dye.
Foul- is something offensive. FOWL is a bird
Hole-Whole. one is what a moth makes in your shirt, the other means the complete item.
Holy-Wholy- One is like 'Godly' or "saintly" or Pure and the other means completely.
this list is getting too long... gonna skip a few... just buy a thesaurus or a dictionary...
and the top ones this week are:
THREW/THROUGH - "I threw the ball" as opposed to "The car passed through the tunnel"
and
THERE/THEIR/THEY'RE- "they ran over there to the park"... " It is their car, it belongs to them"
"they're going to eat cake" (they are)
and SENSE and CENTS- I almost forgot that one....
CENTS is money. something in short supply these day.
SENSE also seems to be in short supply, but it means knowledge- like "Common Sense" or it means to detect something. "The machine will sense the presence of electricity"
I am sure I am missing a lot- Add your that you have seen recently...
Comments:
I've seen so many lately! I also have had to skip some posts or replies because I couldn't read it due to no punctuation. I also think that most of the time CM members just need to slow down and re-read what they wrote!
what's funny are the ones that talk about the grammar problems..
but spell it wrong - GRAMMER
Don't get me started, although I am fine with overlooking a few spelling errors, grammatical errors make me crazy! Lend vs. borrow, which and witch, teach vs learn...and yes, someone has actually said to me, "Will you learn me how to do that?" so many choices. I knowed (knew) it was time to pull the boys from public school when his 2nd grade teacher (PRESUMABLY) with a degree sent a note home about Pat's use of grammar with "their" and "they're" misused...seriously?!? BYE, BYE public school..hello homeschool!! Love this post!!
Kristy
everyone occassionaly makes mistakes.. some people writing are just filled with it though.
I'm an English teacher to 8th graders, and one that really drove me crazy was a girl who kept writing "witch" instead of "which." I corrected her over and over again, and she kept doing it!!!
The same girl once wrote a paragraph, and it was like reading a 2nd graders writing. Sad!!
for some reson "THREW" instead of through really bugs me. Like "I drove threw a tunnel"
I SEEN a post just 2day. THERE GRAMMER was no good. THEY'S couldn't even have SPELT CALANDER for this MOTH.
Now the only thing that would have made that closer to what usually gets me rilled up is that I used spaces, spell check and punctuation.
I completely agree. Reading some of the posts on here is like proofreading English writing assignments from first graders!
