You know the slogan Johnson and Johnson uses on their baby product commercials: "having a baby changes everything". Well, how true that is! And here I am reflecting on that almost 2 years after my wonderful son was born! You have NO idea how much it changes everything until you have a baby of your own. That's what I hear myself telling friends who are either already expecting or don't have any children yet. 2 years ago it was the other way around-my friends who already had kids were the ones telling ME that! Even though I now know how much things change once you bring a life into this world, I am still and probably will always be amazed at how things are different.
At times, I miss the "old me"; the person who could just go anywhere she wanted without having to worry about whether or not a little person had enough diapers in his bag for the now LONG trip to the grocery store but we're all human, right? We would all like a little piece of our "old selves" back just so we don't forget who we were before we became mothers. But honestly, even though I do sometimes miss that person, I would never go back because then I wouldn't know what it feels like to be a mom and I wouldn't get to see my little boy's face light up because Mommy is having fun and spending time with him. I am still, to this day, overwhelmed by the amount of love my heart holds for my son. You love your family, your husband, your friends, but the love you have for your child rises above all others.
I think back to before I had Kyle and what I used to do to have fun~going out to a club with my husband, going out to dinner with good friends and then going to each other's house to play games, among other things and you know what? I can't do those things as often anymore but when I do get the chance to, I still have fun and enjoy myself. But honestly? Most days, I don't even WANT to go anywhere without Kyle. Even the things I do for fun have changed since he was born. Who would've thought I'd have the time of my life watching Kyle dancing to the "Mouskedance" song at the end of a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episode? Or laughing till my belly hurts because he and I are playing Hide n Seek and he cracks up every time he finds me?
And the funniest thing of all is even the MUSIC I listen to has changed! Yeah, I still listen to pretty much everything I used to before he was born (rock, pop, hip hop, etc) but in addition to knowing all the words to Bruce Springsteen songs or dancing to the beat of songs I used to hear in clubs, I now know all the words, melodies, and harmonies of songs on Kyle's CDs and his favorite shows on TV! Now that's something only another mother can relate to! My friends who don't have kids yet look at me like I'm crazy when I bust out with the words to the "Little Einsteins" or "My Friends Tigger and Pooh" songs! OK, I admit it, my husband has NO idea what any of the words are to those songs but I know each and every one! I guess that's what happens after watching I don't know how many episodes because Kyle adores them so much!
With all that said, I am grateful for each and every day I spend with Kyle and I cherish each and every moment that I get to spend with him. He is the best gift God has given me, and I love him with all my heart and soul. And while it's totally amazing how things have changed since he was born, I wouldn't want to know how my life would be if he weren't in it.
