Why We Shouldn't Do Housework

So the way this housework thing works, as I understand it, is that I clean and scrub and organize all morning. As I'm cleaning, scrubbing and organizing, my 4 year old trails behind me and crushes cereal in to the floor, draws on the windows with a crayon he has hidden under the couch and dumps out every toy in sight. That sounds really productive.

When it comes to laundry, correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm expected to wash and fold and put away neatly my family's clothes. However, the only time they ever notice that I even do laundry is when I don't. Otherwise they think a laundry fairy drops down out of the sky and does all the work (btw I'm picturing the laundry fairy is named Frank with a big mustache and a sparkly tutu). Therefore if I want recognition for my hard work doing laundry, I should not do laundry. Right?

And another thing! Why is it that my house can be immaculately clean for a week and no one stops by to see it. But, the minute I let things go a bit, okay a lot, people start dropping by? I can make excuses that it was clean yesterday, but they just nod and smile and say they understand my kids are small and I can't help it. No wait! It did look great yesterday. I promise...okay just forget it. So sweet of you to drop by. Without calling first. Careful, don't sit on the wet spot! Sorry about your shoe getting stuck to the floor...

The way I see it, this housework thing is a losing proposition. We would be much happier if we spent more time reading, napping and having lunch out with friends. I think I'm going to write an entire book on this subject...I'll call it Housework is for Idiots.
