My SIL and I had quite a night a few days ago. Two stray dogs were running down a busy four lane road, speed limit is 45, ppl usually do 50+, and most of the people slowed down, but a few looked like they were purposely trying to hit these dogs. So we ended up pulling over onto the shoulder and my SIL got these dogs to come to her. They ended up being to pits (GASP!) who were just as sweet as could be. They looked like hell though, ticks, ribs poking out, one was limping, smelled like they never got a bath. We had my son in the back of the car so we couldn't put the dogs in there.
Then I spent a good 30-40 trying to get help from someone as my SIL is freezing her ass off with these dogs outside the car. We called the police I got connected to two different stations because I was on the border of jurisidictions, and they connected me to Animal Control, which was an answering machine and the guy on there told me call this number..... so I had to call back cause I couldn't find a pen to write the freaking number down and when I called that number it connected me back to the police and they said they couldn't help us they don't deal with loose animals. WTF! Then WHY in GODS' name did the animal control connect me to them!! The lady told me to set them loose. Why in the hell would I do that, I even told her where we were and that these poor dogs probably would get hit cause it was dark, foggy, and on a highway. She could even say sorry to me. So I started to cry cause I would not do that to these poor animals.
So we dug in my truck, got out the jumper cables and my SIL tied the dogs up together with those and she walked about a 1/4 mile down the road to a neighborhood while I followed her in the car with my hazards on. We get there and we are stuck. I figured we could tie the dogs up to a tree rush back to our house where she get her car and then turn and come get the dogs and take them to the pound. We didn't think that was a good idea so we start knocking on doors. (and for all of you wondering I did get my son out of the car wrapped up) Not a single F*****G person helped us!! All we needed was either some real rope or a yard to just put the dogs in for maybe 30 minutes. One guy did answer his door and act like he wanted to help but then his MIL came out and said NO! and shut the door in our faces! How freaking rude is that. I even turned back to see if they had some rope or something but through the window I saw that they just went back to what they were doing, not even a second thought about us.
So I am mad, sad, disappointed at everyone, cause even all the people that drove by us when we were on the side of the road, not ONE person stopped to see if we needed assistance. Its' not like I am asking for someone to come riding in on a white horse or anything, just to slow down, roll window half down and ask if we are OK. I will paint an image for you. My SIL is standing on sidewalk with two dogs who look beat up and with a jumper cable in her hand. My hazards are flashing, I got my baby wrapped up in blankets in my arms, and I am crying, my SIL is about to cry, and not ONE person even slowed down. Is that what this world is coming to? Everyone is so mixed up in all there own shit to not even glance to see that someone needs help, a kind word, a nod, a freaking smile?
I decided to try one more house before we let these poor dogs loose and low and behold, a saving grace, a good decent soul helps us. This little old man, so sweet doesn't even question comes out to help us. He goes and gets some rope from his shed, lets us tie the dogs off to a tree in his yard, even says that he will take a peek at them every few minutes to make sure they haven't gotten tangled, even helps us tie them up and gives a hug. My heart melted. There is some hope, some glimmer, and I wish that everyone could just dig a little bit, find that little speck of goodness and let it out. It doesn't take much, it doesn't even have to be helping in a situation like mine, but to hold a door, say THANK YOU, put down the cell phone for just one minute while you check out at the grocery store,or even(I know I am insane) ignore the ring, letting the person behind you in line go first cause they only have a few things. Realize that maybe someone does truly just needs some help, they aren't crazy, they aren't going to steal or kill you, they just need help. Bring a persons cart in on your way in from the grocery store so they don't have to walk it in, compliment a stranger, SMILE at a stranger. Keep that light shining in our society, don't let it go out. It may be just where I live, but maybe not. I know I will, I try as it is, I do get discouraged though, until something like this happens and it makes me realize that not everyone is a jerk, that there are people out there who make it good to be a part of this world, they aren't out there just doing for themselves, that they think about others.
This weekend I am going to make a card for that man, I don't even know his name. He made a huge impression on me though and will always be in my heart and my prayers. Just realize that maybe some day you can have that affect on someones life, no matter how minute YOU may think it could possibly be, it could mean the world to the person on the receiving end.

AMEN! People are so self-absorbed these days that you'd think common human decency has become completely VOID in everyday life... Just a tiny little bit of compassion can make or break the day for a complete stranger. Long live random acts of kindness!
