There is something wonderful and overwhelming about my oldest turning 9. I have been a mom for 9 years now. Wow.
Saturday is my son's birthday. I have a lot of planning and decorating and cleaning yet to do.
He wanted a science themed birthday party. Wonder where he gets that from. Must be from his daddy who is working on his PhD in Biology.
I do not think it will top last year's birthday party. But then how do you top a blacked out room (I hung black plastic table clothes over all the walls and thick black fabric over the windows) and glow sticks? You don't. Last year he wanted a space themed birthday party so we had rockets hanging from the ceiling, we made paper plate space ships (then the kids colored them with markers) and then tossed the ships into a black hole (a box with a hole cut in it and spray painted black). We put black light light bulbs in the fixtures in the "space room" and handed out glow sticks to all the kids. They had a BLAST! LOL Even the cake had a really cool looking space shuttle on it (thank you to the freehand work of the folks at Ingle's bakery!).
So, this year, our dining room is going to be transformed into a laboratory and my husband is going to put his skills to use for a bunch of kids ages 6-12. This should be fun!
I am going to make a periodic table of elements (since I can't find a poster) on posterboard. I am still working on other "posters" I can make to hang on all the walls. We are making models of DNA out of pipe cleaners to hang from the ceiling. The tables (2 large folding tables) are going to be covered in white plastic tableclothes. One table is going to be for the projects for the kids. The other table is going to be experiment central!
The project table: We are making a motion ocean (1 cup water, 2 drops blue food coloring, a little sprinkling of glitter, 1/2 cup baby oil, and a floating frog - in that order - in a jar), winter bird feeders (the cardboard tude from paper towels, cut in half, coat in peanut butter and roll in bird seed), and building marshmallow towers (each child gets 50 toothpicks and 30 marshmallows (the big ones) and has to build the tallest free-standing tower). I am also making a lava lamp (water, food coloring, glitter and vegetable oil... add a touch of salt and watch the bubbles go... put a flashlight on it and it glows too).
The experiment table: (BTW, please PRAY for warmer weather as a coupleo f projects need to be done outside) we are setting up a model of a human body (from our science shelf), the microscope (Ken, can you bring some slides home with you? LOL), the mini-planetarium (really cool, just turn off the lights and the ceiling has all the constellations on it). We are also doing the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment (drop mint mentos in a 2 liter of diet coke and be prepared for the mess!) and making a volcano (baking soda and vinegar with a few drops of red food coloring). Can you see why I want some good weather, I don't want a volcano or diet coke exploding in my living room. LOL
We are starting the night with pizza! What kid doesn't want pizza? Then moving on to the fun.
I still have a lot of work to do, trying to figure out more experiments and more decorations but it is going to be a fun week!
BTW, if any of you have ideas for experiments, please let me know!
