I'm posting this because this happened to me yesterday and I'm interested to see what other women in my situation would have done.

The quotes in orange are her (the woman who interviewed me) EXACT words...

I had a job interview yesterday (January 28th)...This was for a receptionist (35%) / Company to company sales (65%) position...They are a wholesale operation that sells just to businesses and not to the individual public...The woman I interviewed with asked all the usual questions and then proceeded to tell me about "What we sell"... "Alternative tobacco accessories"...more specifically "Glass pipes"..."Now, we do not advocate usage" (what did she mean by "usage"? "Usage" of what?)..."All of our products are classified "for tobacco use only"  ...I thought, "yeah...riiiight"...Just so I can make sure I'm not mistaken here, what does all that sound like to you? To me, it sounds like they sell fricken drug paraphanalia! I guess it must've shown on my face when she said "glass pipes" because she said she could tell I was hesitant, and that that was okay, cuz this job wasn't for everyone...I just told her that  "I mean no disrespect", but that I was indeed hesitant and that I really just felt that the job and I were not right for one another... On one hand, I feel guilty for not taking the job, but on the other hand, I just can not in good conscience be a part of something like that knowing what they are realistically used for...and I thought to myself, "If this isn't a job that I can take and go to career day at my daughter's school and tell those kids exactly what I do for a living, then maybe it's something I shouldn't be doing"...and just for the record, I know that legally, they have to slap a label on the package that says something like "FOR TOBACCO USE ONLY"...That in my eyes doesn't mean a damn thing...I can wear a sign around my neck that says "I'm a size 5", but it doesn't make it a reality...and if they honestly think people are using these things "for tobacco ONLY", then they are appearently, imo, too stupid for me to be working for anyway...I'm bummed that it didn't work out, but I honestly, in my heart of hearts, believe I made the right decision...

When you vote yes or no, please leave a comment explaining why you voted that way...and please vote this post as "popular"...I really am very interested in hearing other's opinions on this issue.

You know, in India (and other countries), they use these pipes for smoking other tobacco, not drugs....  It's mostly America that have made these seem taboo.

I would have taken it.  You're selling to other companies, not people.  People that buy them and use then do that of their own free will.  You are just getting product from one place to another.  JMO.  I guess it wouldn;t bother me any more than working in a liquor store, and selling to a bar, you know?  People are going to drink whether I sold it, or someone else....

Ladies...Thank you so much for your opinions! Even though we may not agree on the issue itself, I truly appreciate you for giving me your thoughts on this...

I would have taken the job. It is not illegal to sell 'pipes' in the US and a job is a job.

They're only pipes!

Would you not work at a place that sold hypodermic needles because junkies use them to get high??

I voted No, reguardless of ANY job; if you don't feel comfortable in your heart with it then your going to be miserable.  Pretty sure I wouldn't want to show up at career day for my child and proudly show off my glass pipes.

That's a good question and I am so glad you asked...Thank you. Here is my answer:

If I knew that they were being sold to shops (not hospitals, or other medical facilities) that sell them to their clientele specifically for the purpose of  "getting high", then no...I wouldn't.

I also have a personal issue with pet shops and stores that get their animals from mills and I wouldn't go to work for them either out of principle. It all comes down to MY belief system and what I feel is right for ME. I just wanted to see what other moms think on this issue.

No I feel that to have a moral issue with it and do it because you need work is going against your own morals and principles. I would not have taken the job either just to the fact that she so blatantly laid it out as to the usage it is used for and the fact they do not condone it but know its helping to keep the paraphenalia on the street for such use.

I wouldve takin the job, but thats just me. A job is a job, now-a-days, and the other posters do seem to have alot of good points.
You do have to stick to what you think is right, though.
This is your decision and no one elses.

No. As a nurse, there is no way I could work for someone who sold anyhting related to tobacco.
