Well, Mattison had to go in for an MRI this past Thursday (Jan 29th). She has a very small head size. It is off the chart. Her development is just fine, in fact it is above average, so her doctor wasn't too concerned. The MRI was just to make sure there wasn't anything there that could cause problems later.
I have t say that it was absolutely horrible to watch them stick her with all kinds of needles and tape her down and the worst part was watching them administer the anesthesia and seeing those little eyes roll back and her pass out. It was very scary to me.
We got the results back on Friday (thank goodness it was so quick!). They said that everything looked fine, there were no abnormal growths and her skull bones were not prematurely fused. All good news!!
Then, I got that big 'but'.
Apparently there is a problem with the growth of her white matter in her brain (a type of brain tissue that connects the different area of the brain and allows them to communicate to each other). She said this was completely unrelated to her head size. It was just a coincidence that they discovered it. She said it is probably nothing, but they want to schedule her for a second MRI in three months to monitor the growth more closely.
I know the doctor said it was not a big deal, but hello?? She is also telling me that there is still a chance that my baby's brain will not develop correctly. That is kind of a big deal. I did some of my own research since my dr was being very vague with me and discovered that people who have disorders with their white matter tend to develop normally as a child because the brain area is so small, the different areas can communicate to each other with out using the white matter. As you get older, though, your brain grows more and more white matter because it is necessary for future development.
I am sure my little MAttison is just fine and will have no problems, but it's hard to ge that worry out of your head.
Here's some good news that is a great distraction for me: MAttison is turning 1 this Thursday!!!!

Happy Birthday to Mattison! And i am praying for her. Sometimes it seems with little ones they will find something on a test and say its a little "off" but I don't think they know exactly what it is...When my sister was pregnant with her second son they did several ultrasounds because his head was larger than they normally see. He's fine...he's 8 now and he looks a lot like my dad. We looked back at some toddler pics of my dad-his head looked a lot like David's. :) Keep us posted! ![]()
