Theater Works Proudly Presents "Crime and Punishment"
An Arizona Premiere
|
PEORIA, AZ - Why are we endlessly fascinated by the dark recesses of the human soul? Before Law & Order, there was CRIME AND PUNISHMENT - Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic, celebrated tale of motive and murder, perhaps the greatest and most insightful crime story ever written. This play adaptation will have audiences at the edge of their seats. CRIME AND PUNISHMENT premiere's in Arizona only at Theater Works and runs February 6th - February 22nd. Directed by Richard Hardt, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, an impoverished, self-introspective St. Petersburg ex-student who formulates and executes a plan to kill a hated, unscrupulous pawnbroker seemingly for her money, thereby solving his financial problems and at the same time, he argues, ridding the world of an evil worthless parasite. He tests his ideas about his conscience and desires, the moral law and human nature. After the murder, he goes through a journey of affirmations, self-doubts, guilt, and run-ins with a variety of experiences and people, driving him to ultimately confess to the murders and suffer the consequences of his actions. The play's premiere earned Chicago's prestigious Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Adaptation in 2002/2003 and was acclaimed by the Chicago Sun-Times as "stunningly lean, taut and emotionally searing." ![]() |
