OKAY I'M GONNA WARN YOU, THIS IS NOT A HOAX! IF YOU HAVE ARACNOPHOBIA - BEWARE! NIGHTMARES WILL ENSUE. THIS IS JUST ABOUT THE SCARIEST THING IN THE WORLD....TO ME!!!! THIS WAS IN AUSTRALIA. AND YES THAT IS A REAL, REGULAR SIZED BIRD. THAT IS HOW BIG THIS THING WAS!!!! ITS CALLED A 'GOLDEN ORB WEAVER SPIDER', I DID SOME RESEARCH THESE THINGS EXIST! AND THEY ARE FRICKIN HUUUGE! I WOULDNT SURVIVE WITH THESE THINGS NEARBY, THANK GOD I LIVE IN CALI!!!!

here
is a link to the site these pics were found, it has the full story and
a few more pics from different angles. Google this spider to see more
CRAZY pics....
**UPDATE - New Info***
ok so here's what I found: basically these things are all over but the further away from the equator they are the smaller they are. So thats a good thing for us here in America. Also, the WOMEN are the bad asses! thats riiiight! woohoo...they can be up to 600 times larger than the males! From what I've seen the largest ones in North America are about the size of a hand. They are also HARMLESS. Painful bites, but harmless. The banana spiders in South America and elsewhere in the world are sometimes much bigger and usually deadly!!!! Check out this youtube video and you can see one eating a bird!!!! (its called Rodeo Love - that ones for you Dani :0)

omg.. now I don't want to go to florida.. but that's where I"m supposed to be going.. aaahhhhh!!!! Ewww spiders.. gross!!!!! I dont know how I looked at that pic cuz I HATE spiders.. there was a huge one on our porch this summer and I refused to step foot on the porch till it had been killed!
They have those gigantic things in FL? I know they have some scary spiders and snakes in Australia...some of the most poisonous in the world too
Banana spiders are different but basically the same size.
**WARNING** Don't click the link if you don't want to see pictures of a spider the size of your hand.
We have banana spiders here in Texas. They are big but not as big as that thing in those pics. That spider in those pics is HUGE. you could saddle him up like a horse and ride to town!!
Right, right. Sorry. haha
I'm more of a tarantula and wolf spider kind of girl. I think spiders and other arachnids are fascinating.
