Question: Is 21 mo too young to go on a road trip from FL to GA to AL with grandma and great aunt?
Total Votes: 7
My MIL has posed a q to DH and I. She and her sister want to take DD to GA for a visit with a cousin then on to AL to visit more cousins for a week trip. DD is only 20 mo now and would be 21 mo at the time of this "trip". They would take many breaks so it wouldn't be too hard on her in the car seat. I have been away from her for a week before but she has been home the whole time vs being on a road trip. It made me nervous when MIL first brought it up. I worry about her missing mommy and being overwhelmed by over bearing adults. LOL What if the car broke down etc. The otherside of me says I know she would enjoy seeing her cousins.
I'd like to say thank you, I don't feel comfortable with DD going without one of her parents at this time. When is a good age to even let your child go on a trip with grandparents?
What do you ladies think???? Have you done this before? Feel free to explain your answer. Thanks in advance!!!!
**Update**
Well DH told MIL that I wasn't comfortable with her going on the trip (even though he didn't mind if she went) Apparently she didn't understand why I wouldn't agree but she did respect my wishes and didn't keep on about her going. DH told her it wasn't that we didn't trust her just that I felt she was too young to go without her mother.

I also agree that 21 months is too young to be on a road trip without the parents. Of course, I'm likely an over-protective mother. But, I do NOT like someone else driving my baby around town, much less out of state.
In fact, we are going back to AZ to see our families in May and we will be allowing our DS (19 months at that time) to stay overnight with his grandparents (DH's parents and mine) without us there. However, I will be installing a carseat in each vehicle before we leave him.
Plus, I do think that a week away from both parents at that age is probably a bit overwhelming not to mention being in unfamiliar places.
Well, I could go on, but this is an issue that I myself am currently dealing with so it's a hot topic. LOL. But, I would (and am - in my own situation) saying that it is too young.

I wouldn't allow it unless I got to go along. 20 mos a too young, IMO, to travel without parents. I wouldn't care if I trusted my in-laws or not...I don't know what age I think would be appropriate. It all depends on the child I guess. An over night to Grandma's house, sure, but not a whole week road-trippin!
