Wow, We did good.
Yesterday I spent the entire day with my daughter and her best friend. We went to Imperial Beach, to Silver Strand across to Coronado, then back tracked a bit to Point Loma and Cabrillo National Monument. It was like a mini vacation without leaving the county. At one point, late in the day when we were at Cabrillo, I realized that I didn't feel quite right. I realized this because I felt a "low" coming on. I'm diabetic, and a "low" means my blood sugar was low. Too low. It started with a strange feeling in my lips, like your foot feels when it falls asleep...tingly and semi-numb. Shortly after that I felt light-headed, and like I wanted to jump out of my skin. It's an anxious, jittery feeling that causes all of your muscles to feel like they're contracting inward. My teeth were chattering, though I wasn't particularly cold...in fact, I was started to sweat a little. I sat down on a rock by the Tidepools. My daughter, my lovely girl, took one look at me and knew exactly what was happening. She ran back to the truck, where I keep some glucose tablets, and brought them to me, and then she sat next to me on the rock until she was sure I was ok. I haven't had a low in a long time before yesterday. I was impressed that she knew so quickly, responded so quickly. I sat there on the rock with my daughter, watching her hair shimmer in the waning sunset, and thought... Wow. We did good.
