Why not make stuff ourselves?

I've been meaning to take better care of my skin the last couple of years (kinda dry now), and putting on my older son's abandoned Clean & Clear moisturizer from time to time this winter, and that's about it.

Luckily if I get any blemishes they're very minor, and I wear makeup infrequently, therefore neglecting my skin by default. In past years I've used cleansing systems by Clinique, Olay, Eo, Burts Bees, Nutrogena among others. Most of which makes my skin itch (Olay night cream) or burn (Clinique Toner 2, dropped that in high school.) More recently, I've really liked the Eo for the gentleness and natural formulations (rosewater, coconut milk.) But those types of luxury natural formulations don't fit the family budget.

While weeding out my books this week, i rediscovered a volume full of recipes for toners, scrubs etc. which got me thinking. Depending on skin type/needs the ingredients may already be in your house .

With this inspiration I've started using cold brewed green tea (mine has mint in it).... It's perfect for me... it gently tighted pores with out feeling taut, stiff or stripped. The antioxidants are a nice bonus too. I read it can be kept in the fridge for a few days (no preservatives like over the counter products.)

My new overnight moisturizer: Olive oil (preferably organic)...I also blended in a dab of coconut oil in my little jar for better scent. Apply it sparingly to face and neck with a cotton ball, and massage in. My skin feels awesome when i wake up...

I'm on the market for a new daytime moisturizer (i want spf) and cleanser. I've hit my limit with most drugstore brands. I'd really like to try Ahava (digging their body lotion sample) or Dr.Hauschka stuff but at $25 + not doable right now. At the moment Jason Red Elements is more within reach...I think Whole Foods carries it so I can put those into rotation, and take better care of my skin.

What works for you?
