Selma Hayek Breastfeeding in Africa

I heard on the radio the other day that Selma Hayek breastfed a starving baby in Africa.  I am proud to be a bfing momma and think that she should be proud of what she has done.  The djs were treating it like it was something she should be ashamed of.  They said things like If you want to feed your own child until he is 8 thats fine.  But you shouldnt be breastfeeding other peoples children. 

Okay first anyone ever hear of a WETnurse? hello? people used to use them all the time.  Why do you think they were called WETnurses.  That was their main job was to bf someone elses baby or babies.  And if you see a starving child do you not want to do all you can to help the child eat?  Formula is a MANUFACTURED PRODUCT.  I mean no offense to mothers who choose formula for whatever reason they have but in a place like Africa it lacks certain things that breastmilk can provide.  First off, where do they get clean water?  that can pose a problem.  Secondly, this child will get the immunities it needs to keep down disease. Isnt it better that somebody take the time to feed the child.  Especially when he is not old enough to consume actual food yet?  

Why is being a mother to every child suddenly a crime?  People are also talking about when your kid has teeth stop breastfeeding?  It is not the childs only recourse anymore duh.  My son is 2 and bfs before naps and before bed for about 2 minutes. TOTAL.  It is a comfort for him and helps him to settle in for the night.  Its not like i suckle him to sleep anymore.  What is so wrong for doing what nature intended?  Nature gave us breasts to feed children.  Formula is the oddity and yet we treat breastfeeding women who do what women have done for centuries like they are the odd man out.  How long you breastfeed is up to you.  BUT no one should make you feel bad for breastfeeding no matter how long you do it. 

Now mind you in my personal opinion bfing to the age of 8 or 9 is a little long for my personal taste.  But that is not what i am going to do.  I will try to wean my child by the time he reaches the age of four.  Even that is longer than i originally intended but its such a time of bonding for my son and I.  We connect and no one can interrupt that special time. 

Bash if you must but i take no offense from undereducated opinions off the radio and i wont take offense here.

I heard them trashing her because of it on tv last night, and I swear if I could  have, I would have went through the television, and choked everyone of them.  They were making nasty comments about how many animals are hungry, and she should feed them too.  They were just so NASTY ! 

I think it's great that she did that.  I breastfed my daughters, and could have easily breastfed someone elses baby without blinking an eye.  That baby was sick, and she was simply giving it the best nutrition available.
