A little back story here......I used to work day shift (either 7-3:30 or 9-3:30, depending on what assignment I had) but have worked evenings from 3:30 - 10pm for a little over a yr now. During that year, although I have always been a "morning person" I have started going to bed around 1am. I can't get to sleep before then anymore. Typically, I still get up early (between 6:30 and 7:30) and take a nap sometime during the day.
For some reason my boss got it in his head to schedual me to work 7am to 3:30 today so I dragged my ass out of bed at 5:30 after going to bed at 1, took a shower and went off to work. I was assigned to work "B" wing and around 9 am the "D" wing cleaner came up to me and the following conversation ensued.....
"D" winger - What are you doing here?
Me - uhhh cleaning
"D" - but why?
Me - IDK ask Chris (boss)
"D" did you work last night too?
Me- No, if I did I would probably be half dead already (joking)
"D" - Well, my daughter does it all the time. She works dispatch for the sherrifs department and she works at night and goes back in at 5 am the next day.
Me - umm OK
She then leaves. Mind you this woman is the kind you love to hate. She is in her 70s, which in itself is not a problem but she is ALWAYS bragging about how she is still working at her age. If she overhears a conversation you are having about your kids or just about anything she HAS to one up you somehow. If someone asks me how my oldest DD is doing (she has a brain tumor but is doing well), she has to butt in about HER grandbaby died of a brain tumor. Yeah it's sad but the person was talking to me, not her and asking me about MY family not hers. She is always pissing and moaning about how the work is getting hard for her but they better not fire her because she is "old" because she will file suit against our employer. Everything about her family and life is either bigger and better than anything you are going through or 1000xs more tragic.
So at lunch time all us cleaners were eating lunch, I finished up and told the "A" wing cleaner I was going outside for a smoke before break was over. The next conversation......
Me- I'll be back, I,m gonna go smoke
"A" - I thought you were trying to quit
Me- I was but I gave up, it is to hard with Mark (hubby) smoking in the house all the time.
"A" - I can understand that, I feel sorry for people who are trying to quit and just can't seem to. I know it has to be hard even though I have never smoked myself.
"D" - Well, MY son quit and his girlfriend smoked around him ALL the time
by this time I had enough of her snotty, superior remarks about her f^%&**g " amazinly, wonderfuly, perfect" family, I just looked at her and said in a bit more than slightly sarcastic tone:
"Well, I am SO glad your son has so much more will power than me, BRAVO for him!"
Then it was MY turn to turn and walk away. I went outside, smoked my cigarete, and giggled at the look on her face as her jaw hit the floor.

HEEHEE It felt good to finaly say something back after hearing 5 years of shit dribbling out of her lips. I have tried so hard to ignore this woman. I have tried being friendly or at least cordial but today was the last day she wanted to annoy me after only having 4 hours of sleep.
I am now going to have me ANOTHER cigarette and crawl my worn out tired butt to bed early and sleep in tomorrow. I don't have to get the kids off to school and tomorrow I am back on my evening shift.
