       Mine was closed to $300 just this month and we live in a tiny, single wide, 2 bedroom mobile home. This is urgent because there's a deadline for this please vote this popular and give me a   I like a lot of moms are scraping pennies just to pay our light bill. Mine was closed to $300 just this month and we live in a tiny, single wide, 2 bedroom mobile home. I'm at the point right now of, do I buy food or pay the light bill. I called them and they won't even let me pay it in parts, they said if i don't pay the full amount in the next few days they'll turn it off. My best friend has already has hers turned off a few times in 2008 because she couldn't afford to pay it and feed the kids (she has 4 kids, ages 2,5,8, &9). Our whole county is suffering so bad that ALL local and state organization that help people pay their light bill if they're short have been out of funds to do so for almost a year now!

That really sucks.

I hope each of you have changed all your lightbulbs to CFLs or LEDs. LEDs are expensive, but they last a really, really long time and use 7 watts instead of 75 watts like your regular bulb. Plus the LEDS don't have the mercury in them like CFLs. There are other things to do too. I know y'all are all smart and keeping up with "greener" energies to use! Maybe that is why the power company wants to charge more? They are losing money?

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all live "off the grid?" I would love to have solar panelling put on our house since we live in the desert. It's sunny 364 days here. (okay, we do get cloudy days and rain, but you get what i mean lol).  Our power company here helps people do that with less expensive loans, sometimes even grants. Then you get rebates! Oh how nice would it be for the power company to pay you instead?!

Anyway, my little rant was my way of bumping your journal!

My bill is relatively tiny compared to some peoples. IDK what I'm doing differently than everyone else but my bill was about $140 this month compared to under $100 same time last year.

I think it's absurd to have power customers have to pay to build the new nuclear power plant (that has been postponed anyway!) and to have us STILL paying the increased fuel charge even after gas prices took a nose dive.

We get no choice in our power company like we would for phones for example.

My bill is usually over $250 in the summer and with an increase of this amount I will NOT be able to pay it come the summer months.

We have those energy light bulbs. We wash ONLY the kids cloths in hot water (dirty boys, need I say more?). We live in Florida. We keep our air set on 78 and if it's cold our heat set at 68. Both boys have asthma so I can't let the house get to extremely hot or cold but I do what I can. My grandmother who lives 15 minutes from me has a different power company and her bill is on average around $100 a month...and her home is double the size of mine. But we aren't allowed to chose our power companies, it's not fair. My husband works overnights at walmart so we're not exactly rich ya' know? I have two boys growing boys with the appetite to match. I don't get fancy cable (just channel 2-22 so the kids can watch PBS) , my cable bill is only 9.99 a month. I don't have road runner or anything like that for the Internet. Everything here at home is basic and I still don't know how I'm going to pay this bill and it seems like the less power we use the more our bill continues to go up each month. We keep our curtains open during the day for light and only have 1-2 lights on in the evening. We even unplug everything if we're not using it, even the little things like the computer, t.v. microwave, lights, ect. We don't even leave town unless we HAVE to to save gas.I don't what else to do and I really am scared as to what the bill is going to be like this summer cause it can get over 100 degrees here outside!!!

Is this a cooperative?  In Iowa my DH works for the local utility company and they are regulated by the state and are only allowed to make a certain percentage of profit.  When they ask for more $, you would think the world came to an end.  We unfortunately are not on this utility.  I wish we were.  We are served by a cooperative-which doesn't have to be regulated by the state because everyone has a share of the company and a "vote" (yeah, right!).  So they can raise their rates whenever and however much they want.  Since I've been married to my DH (over 7 years), the electric company he works for has only raised their rates once.  Where we have lived for the last 4 years, they have raised our rates 4 times!!!!!  And they can.  Just because.  Its annoying as hell.  We pay almost twice as much as people 15 miles east of us because you don't get a choice as to whom your electric company is.  It all depends on where you live.
