Music was around through my entire childhood.  The stereo was always on.  Saturdays were cartoons in the morning, and then once American Bandstand was over, Mom switched on the stereo and started cleaning.  On Saturday nights, they had friends over to play cards, and they listened to the Oldies station, trying to call in and stump the DJ every week.

In my memory, there are categories of songs.  There are housecleaning songs, and in the car songs, and card playing songs and even hanging out at Grandma's house songs - where the radio was also always on, but the music was different.  Rather than narrow them down, I guess I'll find one of each.

House cleaning song:

You know how every mom has a song they make their 3 year old sing to entertain friends and family?  That was mine.  I'd sit on my swingset for hours mangling the words to Top of the World at the Top of my Lungs.

In The Car:

I was probably the youngest Dr. Hook fan on the planet.  My cousins hated it.  We'd go somewhere with a jukebox and we'd each get to pick one song.  I'd always play this one.  They considered it a waste of a quarter.  (ok, technically, half a quarter, damn I'm old)

Card playing song:

No words.  Doesn't need em.

Grandma and Grandpa's house song:

That really was a tough one, but that was one of Grandpa's favorites so he played it a lot.

I'll stop there - not even going into those horrid 80's.
